Softball Splits Opening Weekend Series with Norfolk State

NORFOLK, Va. – For the second consecutive day, Morehead State softball was able to capture one-half of a doubleheader against Norfolk State. After dropping the first game, 5-3, the Eagles bounced back once again to earn a victory in the second contest of the day, 3-2.

While offense proved to be the difference-maker yesterday, it was pitching that reigned supreme this afternoon as MSU struck out 11 Spartan batters in the two games. Kelsey Perkins got the nod for the Eagles in both contests today, pitching a combined 7.2 innings while fanning seven and allowing only two runs.

Errors proved the deciding factor in all four games of the opening series for Morehead State as the winning team had the lesser amount of unforced mistakes in every ballgame. The second tilt of today's doubleheader provided an example of the importance of defense as the Eagles committed zero errors while flashing several great plays with the glove.

"We are proud of the way this team responded to adversity," said head coach Samantha Jones. "They were resilient on defense and that is why they came out on top during that last game. Our pitchers did a great job in the circle hitting their spots but our defense won that game for us. There were three plays that could have easily been on (SportsCenter) Top 10. We are excited for the momentum this gave us going into the coming week as we face Bellarmine and Western Michigan next weekend."

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1
  • Morehead State was able to pick up where it left off last night, scoring on an RBI single by Alexis Strother in the top half of the first.
  • Norfolk State added a run of its own in the bottom half of the same inning after a bases-loaded walk brought in a Spartan runner.
  • NSU took the lead in the bottom of the third after a base hit drove in two more.
  • The Eagles were able to tie the game after a triple by Peyton Jordan scored a pair of MSU runners in the top of the sixth.
  • Norfolk State scored the last runs of the game on a two-run double in the bottom half of the sixth to account for the 5-3 final tally.
NOTABLE – GAME 1
  • Stolen bases by Kirya Kingery and Madeline Gailor marked the fourth straight game that at least two Eagles were successful in stolen base attempts, a streak dating back to the final game of the shortened 2020 season.
  • Alexis Strother continued her hot streak, going 2-for-4 with an RBI, her third on the year. She also came in for 3.1 innings of relief pitching.
  • Peyton Jordan's triple marked the first three-bagger of the year for MSU as well as the first two RBI of the freshman's young career.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 2
  • MSU scored first for the third straight game after Josie Wefer singled down the left-field line to earn her first career RBI.
  • The Spartans answered back in the bottom of the fifth off a solo home run that sailed over the left-field fence to tie the game at one apiece.
  • In the top of the eighth, the Eagles were able to the international tiebreaker, allowing each team to place a runner on second to start the inning, to their advantage as Trinity Spear came around to score after a sacrifice bunt was thrown away by Norfolk State's catcher.
  • Morehead State executed another bunt as Kirya Kingery crossed the plate to account for a 3-1 margin.
  • The Spartans were also successful in scoring their extra-inning baserunner on a single through the left side but were unable to find any more offense as the game ended with a 3-2 Morehead State victory.
NOTABLE – GAME 2
  • A single by Alexis Strother in the fourth continued her four-game hit streak, the second-longest of her MSU career. She previously had a six-game streak that began around the start of the 2020 season.
  • All three of Josie Wefer's plate appearances came with runners in scoring position as she took advantage of her first opportunity with an RBI single to account for MSU's first run.
  • MSU pitchers earned six of their 11 strikeouts in the second matchup of the day including four by starter Kelsey Perkins.
  • The Eagles' 11-game streak of at least one stolen base came to an end with MSU failing to snatch a bag for the first time since February 23, 2020, against Central Arkansas.
  • Junior Peyton Slater is now tied for eighth in MSU history in times hit by a pitch after she was struck for the 16th time in her career in the second game of the day.
