CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – After its first day in Clarksville, Tenn., Morehead State Softball is 0-2 against OVC rival Austin Peay. The Eagles began the day at Cathi Maynard Park with a 4-1 loss before falling 4-0 in the nightcap.
The four runs scored by the Governors in each game are tied for the second-least allowed by MSU pitchers this season. Offensive struggles by Morehead State proved to be the difference-maker in both contests as the Eagles combined for eight hits on the day.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME ONE
- Austin Peay struck early with a two-RBI double in the bottom of the first.
- MSU cut the lead in half after Peyton Rose singled to left to drive in Peyton Jordan after the latter began the top of the fourth with a double.
- The Governors saw two more cross the plate in the bottom of the fifth after a two-out triple pushed the margin to 4-1.
NOTABLE – GAME ONE
- Morehead State set a new season-high of three doubles as Alexis Strother, Lennon Spicer, and Peyton Jordan each hit a two-bagger.
- The Eagles turned their first double play of the year as Peyton Rose picked off an Austin Peay runner at first after catching a liner to third.
- This marked the first Morehead State game of the season where neither team committed an error.
- Freshman Lennon Spicer pitched the fourth complete game of her young career, throwing 6.0 innings with one strikeout.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME TWO
- For the second consecutive game, Austin Peay scored in the bottom of the first. This time, the Governors singled up the middle to make it a 1-0 game after one.
- APSU struck again in the bottom of the third as its second two-out triple of the day drove in two more.
- A sacrifice fly by Austin Peay in the bottom of the fifth accounted for the final run of this 4-0 contest.
NOTABLE – GAME TWO
- Freshman Jen Clausen picked up her first career start along with her first career hit with a single in the top of the second.
- Kirya Kingery has now reached base in 13 straight games dating back to the final game of the 2020 season after she singled to left in the top of the first.
- After ranking second in the OVC in stolen bases coming into the series, Morehead State failed to steal a base in both halves of today's doubleheader.
