Softball Falls to Tennessee Tech in Both Halves of Sunday Doubleheader

MOREHEAD, Ky. – Morehead State Softball lost a pair of games to OVC rival Tennessee Tech this afternoon as it started the day with a 3-1 loss to the Golden Eagles before falling 7-5 in game two.

The Eagles were led offensively by sophomore shortstop Kirya Kingery as she combined to hit 3-for-6 on the day with three runs and one stolen base. Freshman outfielder Kelsey Sparks went 2-for-3 in game two along with a run and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME ONE
  • Tennessee Tech scored the first run of the day on a solo home run in the top of the third.
  • MSU tied the game in the bottom of the fourth as Kirya Kingery doubled down the left field line to drive in a runner.
  • The Golden Eagles earned the last two runs of the game in the top of the fifth on an RBI groundout and fielding error by MSU to account for the 3-1 final score.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME TWO
  • TTU kicked off the scoring early with a three-run homer in the top of the first.
  • MSU quickly answered back with a three-run round-tripper of its own as Peyton Slater sent one over the fence to tie the game in the bottom of the first.
  • The Golden Eagles retook the lead in the top of the third off a two-RBI double.
  • Morehead State once again scored in the bottom of the inning as Kelsey Sparks singled up the middle to drive in a run.
  • The Eagles were able to tie the ballgame in the bottom of the fifth as a bases-loaded wild pitch allowed Kirya Kingery to cross the plate for the second time in game two.
  • A two-run home run by Tennessee Tech in the top of the sixth represented the final runs of the 7-5 ballgame.

NOTABLE
  • Morehead State only registered two hits in game one but both were doubles as Maddi Gailor and Kirya Kingery hit back-to-back two-baggers.
  • Lennon Spicer earned the decision in both contests as she combined to throw 7.0 innings while only allowing four hits and striking out two.
  • Peyton Slater's home run in game two represented the first long ball for Morehead State since Alexis Strother's solo homer against Norfolk State in the first game of the season. It was also her first home run since hitting an inside-the-park homer against Ohio-Chillicothe on March 4, 2020.
  • The Eagles are still searching for their first conference win of the season as the two losses this afternoon drop the team to 0-8 in the OVC.
