RICHMOND, Ky. – Morehead State Softball failed to earn victories in both of its contests against Eastern Kentucky on Wednesday as it fell 5-3 then 6-1 to the Colonels.
The Eagles were led offensively by
Peyton Slater as the junior catcher went 2-for-5 on the day. Sophomore
Taylor Rhea added a pair of hits of her own along with a run and an RBI.
The losses drop Morehead State to 6-14 on the season with a 0-11 record in the OVC.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME ONE
- After an error by Morehead State put two runners in scoring position, Eastern Kentucky was able to score first on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first.
- EKU had an error of its own in the top of the second that put Peyton Jordan on second base. Taylor Rhea brought her home on a single up the middle before Maddie Kawall's double to left field drove in another. Kirya Kingery brought in the final run of the inning for the Eagles as she singled to left center to make it a 3-1 contest in the Eagles' favor.
- An RBI single by the Colonels in the bottom of the inning cut the MSU lead in half.
- Eastern Kentucky took the lead in the bottom of the third on a bases-loaded two-RBI double.
- A sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth extended EKU's lead to a 5-3 margin.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME TWO
- Eastern Kentucky led off the bottom of the first with a solo home run to kick off the scoring in game two. A double soon after brought home another run to give the Colonels a quick 2-0 lead.
- A pair of errors by Morehead State in the bottom of the third allowed three more runs to cross the plate for EKU.
- An RBI sac fly in the bottom of the fourth pushed the lead to 6-0 in favor of the Colonels.
- The Eagles got on the board in the top of the fifth off the bat of Alexis Strother as she singled to drive Trinity Spear in to score the final run of the day.
NOTABLE
- CJ Alincic threw a season-high 144 pitches in 6.0 innings with four strikeouts in the first game of the day.
- Kirya Kingery extended her hitting streak to 10 games, going 1-for-3 in both contests of the day.
- The first three in MSU's batting order (Kingery, Spear, and Strother) represented five of Morehead State's 10 combined hits in today's games.
- Maddie Kawall went 1-for-3 in game one while adding a run and an RBI.

Morehead State has a short break before heading to Cape Girardeau, Mo., for a weekend series at Southeast Missouri. The Eagles begin play at 7 pm ET on Friday before a Saturday doubleheader set to start at 3 pm ET.
