Softball Falls to Southeast Missouri in First Game of Weekend Series

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Morehead State Softball fell 8-0 in its first of three games against OVC foe Southeast Missouri. The Eagles faced the tough task of going up against the most recent recipient of the OVC Pitcher of the Week Award in SEMO's Rachel Rook.

The right-hander threw 5.0 scoreless innings with seven strikeouts while holding the Eagles to a single hit. Freshman Lennon Spicer pitched 4.0 innings for MSU as she struck out three Redhawk batters on the day.

Spicer squared off against a high-powered offense in Southeast Missouri as the Redhawks put up eight runs on 10 hits including three home runs.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A deep fly ball by SEMO in the bottom of the first took an unfortunate bounce off the glove of Kelsey Sparks in center field as it went over the fence for three early runs by the Redhawks.
  • Southeast Missouri continued its scoring in the bottom of the third as a two-RBI triple was quickly followed by an RBI double to put another three-spot on the board for the home team.
  • The Redhawks hit solo home runs in the fourth and fifth, respectively as the final long-ball represented the run that ended the game as Southeast Missouri earned an 8-0 victory.
NOTABLE
  • Morehead State was held to a season-low of only one hit in the ballgame. It is the least amount for an MSU squad since being no-hit against Southeast Missouri on May 3, 2019. Coincidentally, Rachel Rook was also on the mound for the Redhawks in that contest.
  • Peyton Jordan's single in the fifth was her first base-knock going 1-for-3 in the first game of MSU's doubleheader against Kentucky State on March 17th.
  • Kirya Kingery's hitting streak has ended at 10 games after the shortstop went 0-for-2 in tonight's game. Her streak was the longest for an MSU player since Ellen Barrett recorded a hit in 10 straight games in 2017.
UP NEXT
The Eagles will be looking for revenge against Southeast Missouri tomorrow as it prepares for a doubleheader at the Southeast Softball Complex beginning at 3 pm ET.
