CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – It's back to the drawing board for Morehead State Softball as it takes a pair of losses from Southeast Missouri to end its weekend. The Eagles dropped the first game 10-0 in five innings before falling to the Redhawks 9-1 in six.
Senior
Alexis Strother led MSU at the plate with a pair of hits, including a double, in five combined plate appearances on the day. She also threw 4.0 innings in the circle in game one. Freshman
Lennon Spicer got the start for the Eagles in the nightcap where she pitched 5.1 innings while striking out five Redhawks, the most for her this season since her five punch out performance against Kentucky State on March 17th.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME ONE
- Southeast Missouri hit the ground running in today's first game as it put up seven runs in the bottom of the first, including back-to-back home runs.
- The Redhawks added another pair of runs in the second on a long ball to right center.
- The final score of game one came on a single to center in the bottom of the third that put SEMO up 10-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME TWO
- Morehead State kept the Redhawks from scoring until a two-RBI double in the third finally put a crooked number on the scoreboard. An error by MSU in the following play brought home another for SEMO as it took a 3-0 lead.
- The Eagles were finally able to get a runner across the plate in the top of the fourth as Erin Boyle advanced on the throw that caught Peyton Slater stealing second base.
- Southeast Missouri continued its offensive proficiency with a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth.
- SEMO hit back-to-back homers for the second time today as the final round-tripper marked the second straight night that Morehead State fell by a walk-off home run.
NOTABLE
- For the second night in a row, freshman Peyton Jordan kept the Eagles from being no-hit as she singled to lead off the fifth inning of game one.
- Today's doubleheader marked the first action for catcher Josie Wefer since February 27th against Bellarmine as the freshman had previously missed due to injury.
- With Wefer's insertion into the lineup behind the plate, Peyton Slater started her first game as the MSU shortstop this season. It was her first appearance at short since game two against Ohio-Chillicothe on March 4, 2020.
