CHARLESTON, Ill. – In a back-and-forth affair that saw several near goals, Morehead State found themselves on the losing end of a tight contest against OVC foe Eastern Illinois.
Both teams came out to a relatively slow start with only seven combined shots in the first period of the match. The next 45 minutes saw an increase in offense with a combined 12 shots and five shots on goal between the two squads.
The closely matched contest needed extra time to determine a victor as the home Panthers passed one through the net to secure their first win of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Junior goalkeeper Michelle Jerantowski picked up one of her four saves in the 26th minute that was followed by a defensive save by junior defender Nicole Palmer as she kicked the ball out of play to preserve the 0-0 score.
- Sophomore Eva Kiper was almost able to take advantage of a defensive error by the Panthers in the 50th minute for a shot taken on a tough angle that was able to make it past the EIU goalkeeper but was only sharply hit off the left side of the post.
- Redshirt sophomore Colleen Swift tried to pick up where she left off in the first match of the season as she took the ball past midfield and dribbled to the goal before her shot was saved in the 58th minute.
- In the 65th minute, Jerantowski saved two shots in 12 seconds that kept the Panthers from taking the lead before an EIU corner kick into the box saw the Eagle defense snuff out any potential attack from the home team.
- Sophomore Kate Larbes effort to earn the first score of the game was stopped when the Eastern Illinois goalkeeper saved her shot in the 88th minute.
- Eastern Illinois sealed the victory after a header by Itxaso Aguero set up the eventual game-winning goal as Haylee Renick tapped the ball through the left side of the net account for the final 1-0 score.
NOTABLE
- Morehead State earned a season-high 13 shots in the matchup.
- Sophomore Kate Larbes tied her career-high in shots on goal as three of her four attempts had the potential to make it to the back of the net.
- MSU held Eastern Illinois to just four shots in each of the first two periods.
- Freshmen Madison Feldhaus and Sidney Palla earned their first career starts while Christa Palla saw her first action on the pitch as an Eagle.
