Lennon Spicer Shines for the Eagles as Morehead State Secures Its First OVC Win of the Season

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Morehead State earned its first conference victory of the season by defeating the Tigers of Tennessee State University in game one of the doubleheader between the two teams this afternoon. After securing the 1-0 win, the Eagles eventually fell 6-2 to TSU in game two at Tiger Field.

Today's victory for MSU represented the first OVC win for the Eagles since May 5, 2019, coincidentally also against Tennessee State. It also puts a stop to Morehead State's 10-game losing streak that began on March 21.

Lennon Spicer was the star of the day as she threw two complete games for Morehead State, including a shutout in game one, with eight combined strikeouts. She was also a key contributor to the MSU batting order, going 2-for-6 at the plate with one home run, two RBI and one run on the day.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME ONE
- MSU loaded the bases in the top of the first but was unsuccessful in its attempts to put runs on the board as a groundout to third ended the inning.
- Morehead State scored the first run of the day as Peyton Slater drove Jennifer Clausen home to put the Eagles up 1-0 in the third.
- TSU had runners on the corners in the bottom of the fourth before Peyton Rose was able to field a grounder and throw out the runner at first to calm the scoring threat.
- The Tigers had the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth but were unable to tie the game as Kirya Kingery secured the catch at second base to hold the MSU lead.
- Tennessee State was able to get a runner on base in the bottom of the seventh but couldn't capitalize on getting her across as Morehead State took the 1-0 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME TWO
- After a leadoff triple, Tennessee State put up the first run of the second game by way of an RBI groundout.
- A two-RBI double by the Tigers pushed the margin to 3-0 after two innings of play.
- Lennon Spicer connected on her first career home run, a two-run blast to left field, in the fourth to bring the Eagles within one.
- TSU saw two more runs cross the plate in the bottom half of the inning as a pair of errors by the Eagles helped push the Tigers' lead to 5-2.
- Tennessee State scored the last run of the game on an RBI double down the left field line to account for the 6-2 final score.

NOTABLE
- Morehead State broke out of its hitting slump today as the Eagles combined for 13 hits in its two games in Nashville.
- Lennon Spicer's complete game shutout was the first for Morehead State since Taylor Rhea's outing against Ohio-Chillicothe on March 4, 2020.
- After today's first game, Peyton Slater had secured an RBI in three straight contests for Morehead State.

UP NEXT
The Eagles will now begin preparing for their midweek matchup against Dayton for a pair of games in the Buckeye State. The two contests at UD Softball Stadium are scheduled for 2 and 4 pm ET, respectively.
