Softball Takes Doubleheader Split to Conclude Series with Jacksonville State

MOREHEAD, Ky. – Morehead State Softball came away with a 3-0 victory in the back half of its Monday doubleheader against Jacksonville State after falling to the Gamecocks, 1-0, to begin the day. The Eagles saw an outstanding day from their starting pitchers as Kelsey Perkins and Lennon Spicer combined to only allow six hits on one earned run while striking out six JSU batters between the two games.

Throughout this series, MSU pitchers did an impressive job at keeping notable Jacksonville State batters from doing damage. JSU's leader in batting average, Jada Terry, and the reigning OVC Player of the Week, Alexus Jimmerson, combined to go 1-for-17 on the weekend with three strikeouts while only reaching base three times.

In today's doubleheader, the Eagles were led offensively by Taylor Rhea and Madeline Gailor who combined to go 4-for-9 with three RBI. MSU also saw a drastic change from yesterday in their defensive proficiency with no errors on the day and several plays worthy of SportsCenter Top 10 consideration.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME ONE
- The noon contest between the two OVC rivals was a pitchers' duel as the two starters only allowed a combined five hits while striking out 15 opposing batters in the game.
- The stalemate was broken in the seventh when a pop-up that appeared to be caught on a diving play at third base by Peyton Rose was ruled to have hit the ground. The Jacksonville State runner crossed the plate to give the Gamecocks the lead after Rose touched the bag at third for what she, and the rest of her MSU teammates, assumed was a double play to end the inning.
- After an umpires' meeting upheld the original ruling, JSU held on to its 1-0 lead in the bottom of the seventh to take game one of the doubleheader and the series win.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME TWO
- Morehead State scored early as a two-RBI single by Taylor Rhea followed by a sacrifice fly by Madeline Gailor gave the Eagles the 3-0 lead after one inning of play.
- It was déjà vu for all in attendance as witnesses saw another game of excellent play in the circle. The Eagles' three-run first inning represented the only moments of scoring as pitchers in game two scattered eight combined hits while striking out nine opposing batters.

NOTABLE
- Lennon Spicer threw a complete-game shutout in game two this afternoon, her first since doing so against Tennessee State on April 2.
- MSU batters were hit a combined five times in today's doubleheader, the most in a twin bill for the Eagles since they were hit five times against Eastern Kentucky on March 24.
- Taylor Rhea is the current owner of a five-game hitting streak and a six-game reached base streak, both being the third-longest on the team this season.
- With a win in game two, the Eagles have picked up a victory in their last three conference series.
