MOREHEAD, KY --The Morehead State volleyball team totaled 53 kills and hit a season-high .398Â en route to a 3-0 victory (25-20, 32-30, 29-27) over the Eastern Illinois Panthers Thursday at home at Johnson Arena to kick off MSU's Homecoming weekend.
The conference victory improved Morehead State's record to 10-11 overall and 6-4 in OVC play, marking the Eagles' ninth win in the last 11 against the Panthers. EIU is still searching for its first win in Morehead since 2011.
Game Notes
» Morehead State had three players in double figures in kills, led by Maycie Welborn with a team-high 15 kills.
» Sydney Wyman and Abby Hulsman both had 12 kills each. Welborn, Hulsman and Wyman combined for 39 kills and just three errors.
» The Morehead State front row did a great job defensively, picking up 10 blocks in the match. Welborn, Wyman and Bridget Bessler had five blocks each.
» Morehead State got a match-high 19 digs from Peighton Isley.
» Morehead State attackers were helped by a match-high 43 assists from Bessler.
» Kaitlyn Flynn led all attackers for EIU, with 24 kills.
How It Happened
SET 1 | The Eagles took the first set 25-20 thanks to a strong performance on the attacking side. Morehead State put together a .577 attack percentage with 16 kills in the set victory. The Eagles rallied from down six at 14-8 to claim the win.
SET 2 | After the win in the first set, Morehead State put themselves on the cusp of a sweep with a 32-30 victory in set number two. The Eagles grabbed the set propelled by a solid performance on the attacking side. Morehead State put together a .383 attack percentage with 20 kills in the set win. The Eagles rallied from down five at 7-2 to grab the win. Morehead State's front row had a solid defensive performance, blocking six Eastern Illinois attacks in the stanza. The Eagles warded off a Panther win, trailing 24-22, but scored the next three to send it to extra points.
SET 3 | Morehead State took the third set to sweep the match 3-0. The Eagles persevered in a back-and-forth set to win 29-27 in a stanza that featured nine lead changes and was tied 18 times. Neither team opened up a lead of more than three points along the way. The Eagles hit .300 over the course of a set where they racked up 17 kills. Morehead State's front row had a solid defensive performance, blocking five Eastern Illinois attacks in the stanza.
