Men's Hoops Looks to Quiet the Lions of North Alabama at Home Saturday

MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Morehead State's Men's Basketball team is 4-0 on FamilyLeisure.com Court in Johnson Arena in 2022-23, and the Eagles will look to make it five straight Saturday when North Alabama visits. Game time is 2 p.m. ET.

North Alabama makes its first-ever trek to Johnson Arena in basketball this weekend. The Lions and Eagles have only ever met once, with a 67-57 UNA win at UNA in the 2019-20 season.

The game can be heard on the Eagle Sports Radio Network (WIVY-96.3 FM) with Chuck Mraz and Drew Barnette. It is also available on MSUEagles.com as well as network partner WGOH 100.9 FM/1370 AM. The game will also be on ESPN+. The men behind the mic are Jared Stacy and Dean Hardin.

NOTABLE
• Morehead State has cracked the century mark on the scoreboard twice this season. It marks the first time since the 2018-19 season the Eagles have put together 2+ 100 point outputs.

• Morehead State has three games where SIX players have reached double-digits in the scoring column. 

• MSU shot 60 percent against KCU, the first time since Dec. 7, 2020 the Eagles have hit 60 percent or better (.674 at Eastern Kentucky). 

Alex Gross is one of just six current players on Division I teams to score 2,000+ career points in college. He is the ONLY player in Division I to record 2,000+ points AND 1,200+ career rebounds in college. His career college totals stand at 2,131 points and 1,289 career rebounds.

Alex Gross now has 43 double-doubles in his last three college seasons, including three this season. Gross had MSU career highs of 23 points and 13 rebounds against KCU while hitting 11-of-12 from the field. In the past three games, Gross averaged 17 points and 11 rebounds.

•  Morehead State has the rare opportunity to potentially have four 1,000+ point college scorers on the same team this year. Alex Gross (2,131) and Branden Maughmer (1,792) already have surpassed 1,000. Mark Freeman has 900 and Jalen Hawkins is at 830.

LJ Bryan has never shot below 57 percent for a season in his four seasons at MSU and is currently sitting at 60 percent field goal accuracy for his Division I career.

Mark Freeman and Branden Maughmer both boast career free throw accuracies of 82 percent.

• After scoring in double digits only four times in 34 games in 2021-22, Jake Wolfe has reached 10+ now in three games in the first eight this winter.

• Morehead State ranks 19th in the nation and first in the OVC in fast-break points per game (17.7).

• Morehead State ranks first in the OVC in rebounding margin at +5.4.

• The Eagles rank in the top three in the OVC in 14 of the 25 national statistical categories, including second in free throws made per game, defensive rebounds per game, total rebounds, scoring defense, three-pointers attempted per game and three-point defense.

• Morehead State was selected No. 1 in the preseason Ohio Valley Conference vote of coaches and media relations personnel. Senior guard Mark Freeman was selected to the Preseason All-OVC Team.

• Head coach Preston Spradlin needs four wins to become the sixth head coach in program history to lead his teams to 100+ wins. Spradlin is just the second head coach in program history to lead his teams to back-to-back 20-win seasons.

• Among the 8 Division I men's basketball programs in Kentucky, Morehead State ranks first in wins in the last three seasons - 50.
