MOREHEAD, Ky. --The Morehead State Softball Eagles fell 4-2 in an 11-inning matchup to the Lindenwood Lions Saturday at University Field.
Junior Lennon Spicer (1-3) took the loss in the circle for Morehead State (9-12, 4-3 OVC), which kept the game going in the bottom of the eighth inning after surrendering a go-ahead run to the Lions in the top of the frame. Freshman Jessie Begley started the ballgame and went seven innings, surrendering just one run on three hits, walking three and striking out four.
Senior Kirya Kingery led the way offensively for the Eagles, going 2-for-3 in the with two doubles. Sophomore Ilencia Lightbody put together a standout performance as well, going 2-for-5 with a double. Freshman Emily Williams also helped out, going 2-for-4 for Morehead State with a walk.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Eagles were trailing 1-0 in the eighth inning after Morgan Gersch led off the eighth for the Lions with a solo homer. Kingery came across to score the lone run of the inning for Morehead State and get them on the board. Kingery legged out a double to lead off the eighth. With two outs, Taylor Rhea's liner the hold by first base was dropped, allowing Kingery to scamper home with the tying run.
The teams each had runners on in the ninth and 10th but could not get the go-ahead tallies.
The Lions then scored three runs to retake their advantage heading into the eleventh inning, when the Eagles responded by getting back on the scoreboard themselves. Junior Erin Boyle came across to score the lone run of the inning for Morehead State, which brought the score to 4-2 in favor of the Lions.
