MOREHEAD, Ky. – The Eagles were frustrated offensively in a doubleheader sweep at EIU on Friday, dropping the first game 8-0 and the second 3-1.
Morehead State received a strong start from
Lennon Spicer in the second game, with the junior allowing only five hits and one earned run over 5.1 innings, but failed to take advantage as they left eight runners on base in the contest.
Kaytlyn Cripps led the Eagle bats in the first game, however, going 2-for-2 at the plate, and
Peyton Jordan provided the lone RBI on the day.
Trinity Spear had hits in both games, and has now reached base in a career best nine straight games.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1)
The Eagles struggled to start the game, with five of their first six batters striking out, while EIU took the early 1-0 lead on a two-out single in the first.
Morehead State would have a chance to tie the game in the third, when singles from
Kaytlyn Cripps and
Trinity Spear gave them their best scoring chance of the game, but both were left stranded.
The Panthers put the game out of reach in the following half inning, putting up five runs to take a commanding 6-0 lead, and would end the game in the fifth by bringing another two runs home.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2)
The Eagles got a pair of base runners on in each of the first three innings, but failed to score, and the Panthers took advantage by coming through with two runs in the third.
Spicer stranded a pair in the fourth and the Eagles finally broke through in the fifth, starting with a two base error to put
Trinity Spear on second. Spear would then score on an RBI single from
Peyton Jordan to cut the lead to 2-1.
An unearned run in the sixth stretched the EIU lead to 3-1, and the Eagles again got a pair of base runners on in the top of the seventh, but a double play ended the threat and gave the win to the Panthers.
