MOREHEAD, Ky. – The Eagles couldn't overcome the power of SIUE's lineup on Sunday, dropping their series finale with the Cougars 10-1 in six innings.
The Eagles celebrated their five graduating seniors,
Kirya Kingery,
Madeline Gailor,
Erin Boyle,
Mayumi Kinchen-Atkins and
Taylor Rhea, in both pregame and postgame ceremonies.
Emily Williams led the charge offensively for the Eagles, reaching base in all three at bats, including collecting her team leading eighth double of the season and scoring the lone run of the game.
Peyton Jordan also added a double, and
Madeline Gailor recorded her eighth RBI of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cougars threatened early, loading the bases with only one out in the top of the first, but
Lennon Spicer navigated out of trouble, inducing a fielder's choice and a groundout to escape the jam unharmed. The Eagles then got two runners in scoring position of their own after a
Peyton Jordan double, but left both runners stranded.
SIUE struck first in the top of the third with a two out rally to bring home a pair of unearned runs. They then added to their lead in the fourth with two home runs to leap out to a 5-0 lead.
The Eagles battled back with a leadoff double from
Emily Williams, who advanced to third on a flyout from
Peyton Jordan and was scored on a sacrifice fly from
Madeline Gailor to cut the lead to 5-1.
The Cougars exploded in the sixth inning for five runs, capped off by a three run home run to take a commanding 10-1 lead. The Eagles couldn't scratch across any runs in the bottom of the inning, ending the game in the sixth.
