MOREHEAD, Ky. – The Eagles held leads in both ends of their doubleheader with Tennessee State on Saturday, but couldn't hold either of them, as they were swept by the Tigers, dropping the opener 4-2 and the second game 7-4.
Emily Williams cracked her team leading 11th home run of the season, putting her just one back of the most home runs in a single season in program history.
Trinity Spear and
Erin Boyle also had RBIs, with
Peyton Jordan collecting three hits in the two games.
Jessie Begley tossed a combined seven innings over the two games, holding the Tigers without a run for six of those innings and notched a perfect relief effort in game two.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1)
The Eagles threatened early, when
Trinity Spear led off the game with a hit by pitch, but was stranded at third, and Jesse Begley kept the Tigers at bay to keep the game scoreless after two.
Kaytlyn Cripps drew a walk to open the third inning and came around to score on a two out error on the right fielder to give the Eagles the 1-0 advantage.
Begley stranded a pair of runners in the third and escaped a bases loaded jam in the fourth, setting the stage for an RBI double from Spear in the fifth to extend Morehead State's lead to 2-0.
The Tigers finally broke through in the sixth, putting four runs across to take a 4-2 lead, and the Eagles couldn't scratch out a run in the seventh, ending the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2)
The Tigers struck first in the second game, scratching out a run on a double steal in the first to take a 1-0 lead, but
Emily Williams put the Eagles out in front with a two-run blast in the second inning.
Tennessee State quickly answered back with four runs in the bottom of the second to take a 5-2 lead, and would stretch the lead to 7-2 with another pair of runs in the fifth.
The Eagles attempted a comeback in the sixth, loading the bases thanks to singles from
Trinity Spear and
Peyton Jordan, and a fielding error putting
Kirya Kingery aboard. A sacrifice fly from
Erin Boyle paired with an error cut the lead down to 7-4, but the Eagles couldn't get any closer in the seventh.
