Welborn & Hargan Combine for 42 Kills, but Volleyball Falls to Western Illinois Friday

MOREHEAD, KY --The Morehead State volleyball team totaled 81 kills in a five-set loss (25-16, 17-25, 23-25, 25-20, 15-17) to the Western Illinois Leathernecks Friday at home at Johnson Arena.

The loss dropped Morehead State's record to 7-8 overall and 0-3 in OVC play.

The Eagles were led by a double-double from M.E. Hargan, who registered 20 kills and 17 digs on the day. Maycie Welborn added a career-high22 kills to help the attack. On the defensive end, Peighton Isley chipped in for with 23 digs to go with two blocks from Amelia Nott.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Eagles took the first set 25-16 helped by a strong showing on the attacking end. Morehead State put together a .367 attack percentage with 20 kills in the set victory. The Eagles ended on a strong note, stretching their lead to its largest point in the set to finish out the stanza.

SET 2 | Morehead State dropped the second set 25-17 to tie the match 1-1. Morehead State trailed by as many as 11 points as Western Illinois grabbed the advantage for good at 3-2 in a set that was tied up two times before the Leathernecks took over the lead.

SET 3 | A third-set loss put Morehead State down two sets to one. The Eagles fought back from a seven-point deficit at 16-9, but Western Illinois held on to win the set 25-23.

SET 4 | Morehead State broke their two set losing streak and forced a fifth set with a 25-20 victory in set number four. The Eagles took the lead for good at 20-19 in a set that featured seven ties and five lead changes. The Eagles win came in a stanza where 18 of their 25 points came via the kill.

SET 5 | After dropping sets two and three, Morehead State won set four, knotting up the game at two sets apiece to force a fifth set, but couldn't complete the comeback, losing the set 17-15 and the match 3-2. The Eagles couldn't hang on in a back-and-forth set five, losing in a stanza that featured one lead change and was tied seven times. Neither team led by more than three points in the set. The Eagles dropped the set despite putting together 14 of their 15 points via the kill.

Morehead State is back in action bright and early Saturday morning, with the second match vs. Western Illinois beginning at 10 AM.
