BOX SCORE
MOREHEAD, Ky. -- It took extra points in all three sets, but Morehead State volleyball completed its second consecutive 3-0 sweep over Lindenwood Friday in front of nearly 1,000 local elementary-age children, their teachers and school staffs.
The Eagles outlasted the Lions 29-27, 27-25, 27-25 to improve to 11-12 overall and 7-5 in the OVC race. The Lions lost for the second straight day after reeling off a seven-match success streak. They now sit at 16-9 overall and 10-3 in the conference.
Unlike Thursday's match where the Eagles led wire to wire, today's battle featured 20 total ties and five total lead changes.
The Eagles had to fight to complete the sweep. In the second set, MSU once trailed 20-12 and was down 24-20 before rattling off five straight points. Senior right-side hitter
Maycie Welborn finally finished off the set with a kill.
The first set featured a late tie at 21 before the squads jousted back and forth for the next 12 rallies. MSU finally closed out the triumph with kills by junior outside
M.E. Hargan and sophomore setter
Sydney Sennett.Â
Set three went in favor of the Eagles as they built a 19-14 lead and then had to hold off a Lion rally. Lindenwood stormed back with a 5-0 run to actually take a 22-21 lead. The teams jockeyed again until Welborn squashed the visitors' hopes of at least another set with two kills to end the match.
Welborn was nearly indefensible, with 15 kills and just one error for a team and single-match career-best .483 attack percentage. Hargan picked up her sixth double-double in the last seven matches with a team-best 16 kills and 11 digs. She hit .351.
Sennett nearly had a double-double too with 21 assists and nine digs. Senior libero
Peighton Isley scooped up 24 Lion attempts. At the net, junior middle
Sydney Wyman led the defense with five total blocks.Â
Lindenwood's Nyah Wilson tied Hargan for match honors with 16 kills, while setter Allie Otten produced a double-double with 36 assists and 12 digs.Â
Morehead State is back on the OVC road next week, at Western Illinois Thursday and Friday. Â
