Softball Out-Hits Lindenwood 8-7, but Falls 6-1

ST. CHARLES, Mo. -- Despite picking up eight hits in the ballgame and out-hitting Lindenwood, Morehead State was unable to push across more runs, as the Eagles lost to the Lions 6-1 Friday. The win was the fifth straight for Lindenwood (19-16/7-6).

Freshman Addie Stem (5-11) got the ball to start for Morehead State (10-16, 4-9) and took the loss, after surrendering six earned runs on five hits, with six strikeouts and two walks..The six K's were one shy of her season high. Freshman Cassiti Baroni was a bright spot for the Eagles, coming out of the bullpen and throwing three shutout innings, allowing two hits, with one walk and one strikeout in her finest performance of the season.

At the plate, the Eagles were led by junior Darlene Montoya, who went 1-for-4 on the day with her team-leading eighth double of the season. Freshman Kendra Lewis put together a noteworthy performance at the plate as well, going 2-for-4. Junior Ilencia Lightbody also chipped in for Morehead State, putting together one hit in one trip to the plate while adding a double.

The Eagles were hurt by being unable to bring runners home. The team finished with nine runners left on base. Still, the eight hits marked the 17th time in 26 games the Blue and Gold collected at least six. In total, seven different MSU batters collected at least one hit. The Lions scattered their hits out among seven batters at well.

"It was a tough way to go. We started out scoring early off Darlene's double. We out hit them but couldn't capitalize with runners in scoring after that," said MSU coach Megan Griffith. "We gave up too many free passes and got in a hole. Cassiti did a great job in relief. She fed her defense and we played well behind her."

The teams will conclude their series tomorrow with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. at the Lou Brock Sports Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Eagles got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the top of the first inning. Montoya came across to score the lone run of the inning for Morehead State and get them on the board. The Eagles were unable to hold the lead, as Lindenwood scored six times over the remaining six innings, including one in the second, three in the third and two in the fourth, to grab the 6-1 win.
