GAME 1 | Lindenwood 2, Morehead State 1
ST. CHARLES, Mo. -- Despite picking up five hits in the ballgame and out-hitting Lindenwood, Morehead State was unable to push across more runs, as the Eagles were defeated by the Lions 2-1 Saturday. It was the second straight contest between the two that MSU won the battle in the batter's box, but not on the scoreboarrd.
Sophomore Jessie Begley (5-5) started and took the loss in the circle for Morehead State (10-17, 4-10). The right-hander went six innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on two hits, allowing three walks and striking out three. It was the second straight solid outing for the MSU starter. In the last 13 innings in the circle, she has allowed six hits on one earned run, with just four walks, while striking out six.
The two hits MSU gave up were the second fewest in a game this season.
In the batter's box, the Eagles were led by junior Ilencia Lightbody, who went 1-for-2 on the day with an RBI.
"It was a close game but we didn't make the adjustments we needed to make at the plate. Jessie did a good job in the circle for us. She only gave up two hits," said MSU coach Megan Griffith. "Unfortunately, we beat ourselves defensively. The two runs they scored were on a walk an error and a passed ball."
Lindenwood sophomore pitcher Avery Wapp picked up the win. In the two years worth of games in the series, Wapp has had MSU's number, having collected three of the Lions' four wins against the Eagles.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Eagles were trailing 1-0 in the fourth inning when they first put runs on the board. Morehead State got an RBI single from Lightbody, scoring junior Sammantha Cervantes from second base. Lindenwood then scored one time over the remaining three innings to break the tie and grab the 2-1 win.
In the fourth, Cervantes and sophomore Taikibrea Campbell each drew a walk, before Lightbody's two-out single tied the gama.
Two fifth-inning mistakes doomed the Blue and Gold. Dallis Darnell led off the frame and reached base on an error before eventually scoring the winning run on a passed ball. The fifth inning miscues were the only ones of their kind Morehead State committed in the game. One day after leaving nine runners on base, the Eagles had six stranded in Saturday's first game. Lindenwood left four runners on base. MSU also struck out 10 times versus three for the Lions.
