MOREHEAD, Ky. -- After possibly the best offensive season in OVC history, Morehead State baseball's
Roman Kuntz has been named OVC Player of the Year by coaches and communicators around the conference, the league announced Tuesday.
The honor marks the second straight season that a Morehead State player has won OVC Player of the Year, as
Ryley Preece took home the honor in 2023. It is the 11th time in program history an Eagle has been named OVC Player of the Year and fifth since 2000 (Lance Seasor, Chris Robinson, Niko Hulsizer,
Ryley Preece).
Kuntz rewrote both the Morehead State and OVC record book this season with an offensive output unseen before in the conference. The senior from New Carlisle, Ind., has belted 31 home runs with 92 RBI in 2024, both the most by an individual player in a single season in Morehead State and OVC history.
Kuntz is four RBI short of becoming Morehead State's all-time leader in the category. He became the second player in Morehead State history to hit 50 career home runs earlier this season. His home run and RBI totals currently rank second in the country among all players in Division I.
After being named All-OVC twice as a designated hitter (Second Team in 2022, First Team in 2023), Kuntz transitioned to first base in 2024 and was named First Team All-OVC at the position. In addition to his offensive output, Kuntz holds a .990 fielding percentage.
Kuntz has 23 multi-hit games this season and 24 games with multiple RBI, including five games with five or more RBI. His seven RBI vs. SIUE on 5/16 marked a season-high and the second highest single game total by a player in the OVC this season.
Kuntz is a leader on the Eagle team, and he and his teammates head to Marion, Ill., this week in hopes of capturing the program's fifth OVC Tournament Championship.
