Volleyball Opens With Solid Battle Against Western Kentucky Before Falling 3-1

LEXINGTON, KY -- 
Despite a valiant effort, the Morehead State volleyball team fell to the Western Kentucky Lady Toppers 3-1 (16-25, 25-14, 20-25, 17-25) Friday as the teams opened a newly renovated Memorial Coliseum on Kentucky's campus.

The Bluegrass Battle tournament match was the season opener for both teams. MSU took set two against the WKU squad, which received votes in the preseason AVCA poll and ranked 26th.

Irene Wogenstahl finished with 11 kills on the day to lead the Eagles offense while finishing with a hitting percentage of .269. Defensively, MSU had two players reach double figures in digs as Peighton Isley had 21 and Brenna Bommer had 13. Isley now sits just four digs shy of 1,000 for her career.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Eagles found themselves in an early hole, dropping a tough first set 25-16. Morehead State trailed by as many as 11 points as Western Kentucky never surrendered the lead in a set that was tied up two times before the Lady Toppers took control.

SET 2 | Morehead State responded to pick up a 25-14 victory in set two, evening the match at one set apiece. The Eagles took control of the set lead early on at 2-1 and held the lead the rest of the way. Morehead State led by as many as 13 points at 24-11 before finishing off the set. The Morehead State offense also got a boost from four aces in the stanza.

SET 3 | Morehead State lost set three, putting the Eagles in a 2-1 hole. The Eagles came up short by the score of 25-20. Morehead State trailed by as many as seven points as Western Kentucky grabbed the advantage for good at 4-3 in a set that was knotted up two times before the Lady Toppers took over the lead.

SET 4 | Morehead State then lost the fourth set 25-17 to finish off the match. The Eagles trailed by as many as eight points as Western Kentucky grabbed the advantage for good at 11-10 and Morehead State wasn't able to recover in a set that was tied up four times before the Lady Toppers took over.
