BOX SCORE
LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Morehead State Volleyball senior libero
Peighton Isley recorded a team-high 14 digs and reached the 1,000-dig milestone for her career as the Eagle volleyball team succumbed 3-1 to Northern Kentucky Saturday night at UK's Memorial Coliseum.
The Eagles won the first set 25-14 but then fell 25-20, 25-20, 25-21. MSU fell to 0-2 on the young season.
Isley now sits at 1,009 career digs.
M.E. Hargan led the team with 11 kills and had her first double-double of the year with 11 digs.
Irene Wogenstahl had a team-best six blocks. Defensive specialist
Shea Hefner, who also spent some time at libero tonight, also had double-digit digs with 12. A new NCAA rule allows for two liberos to be in uniform in each set.
After a fast start with 16 kills and just two errors in the first set, the NKU defense stepped up. MSU had 29 kills in the final three sets but also committed 21 attack errors. The Eagles also had five service aces but gave up 10 points on serve mistakes.
With the match tied at 1-1, the second set proved to be momentum changer. Tied at 15-all, the Norse went on a 7-0 run to effectively put that set away. The third frame played out very similarly. The teams were tied 11-11 following a kill by Wogenstahl, but then NKU outscored the Eages 9-3 to move ahead 20-14.Â
MSU surged ahead 12-6 in the final set following Wogenstahl's termination. However, just like the other sets, the Norse rallied. A 10-3 run gave them a 16-15 advantage. Morehead State found itself leading again later on, 20-18, but NKU registered the next five points as it pulled away.Â
NLU upped its winning streak against MSU to eight matches, but the teams have only played five times now since 1985.
MSU now faces No. 9 Kentucky on its home floor Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
