MOREHEAD, KY --The Morehead State volleyball team defeated the Duquesne Dukes in four sets (25-17, 25-17, 20-25, 25-23) Friday at home at Johnson Arena in the first match of the Comfort Inn-Vitatational.
The third win in a row for MSUÂ boosted the Eagles' overall record to 3-4 on the season. MSU now leads the overall series with the Dukes 3-2, with Friday's match marking the first-ever against Duquesne on the Eagles' home floor.
The Eagles' offense was paced by graduate student Irene Wogenstahl, who finished with a career-high 16 kills on the day while accumulating a hitting percentage of .452, and by junior M.E. Hargan, who had 11. Defensively, the home team had three players reach double figures in digs, including senior libero Peighton Isley's 18, 12 from sophomore setter Sydney Sennett, and 10 more from sophomore Courtney Fitzgerald.
Sennett's assist total was the second highest in her career, behind a 28-helper match last fall against Southern Indiana. She also recorded her second career double-double with her dig stat.
Emerson Schrom led the visiting team with a 14-kill effort.
How It Happened
SET 1 | The Eagles took control on the first point and never trailed to win the first set 25-17. Morehead State led by 11 points at 18-7 before finishing off the set.
SET 2 | Morehead State built on a set-one win by earning a 25-17 victory in set number two. The Eagles took the set propelled by a strong performance on the attacking side. Morehead State put together a .457 attack percentage with 17 kills in the set win. The Eagles ended on a strong note, stretching their lead to its largest point in the set to finish out the stanza.
SET 3 | Duquesne avoided a sweep with a third-set victory to make it a 2-1 match. The Eagles fell behind on the first point and never clawed back into the lead before falling in the set 25-20.
SET 4 | Morehead State then responded to earn the match win with a 25-23 fourth-set victory. The Eagles survived a furious Duquesne rally, hanging on to win after leading by seven points at 17-10 earlier in the set. Morehead State got a solid defensive performance from a front row that blocked four Duquesne attacks in the stanza.
