MOREHEAD, Ky. -- A tough night shooting led Morehead State Men's Basketball astray Thursday night as visiting Tennessee Tech came into Johnson Arena and knocked off the Eagles 72-64.
MSU (14-9/9-3 OVC) lost for just the second time in the last 29 times at home (since 2022-23) and absorbed its first home setback this season. Meanwhile, TTU (11-11/6-5 OVC) won for just the second time in Johnson Arena since the 2006-07 season. TTU swept the season series from MSU for the first time since 2005-06.
Morehead State saw Tech use a 10-0 run in the middle of the first half to race ahead and never relinquish its lead the rest of the night. MSU led 16-12 with 10:49 left in the opening half but found itself behind 22-16 just two minutes later. TTU went on to push its halftime lead to 34-26.
In the second half, MSU tried its best comeback effort and trimmed its deficit all the way to 45-44 with nine minutes left, but Kyle Layton's corner jumper on the TTU end thwarted MSU's lead chance, and Daniel Egbuniwe buried a triple at 7:09 to push it back to a six-point game. TTU eventually led by 10 again and never had its lead cut to less than six the remainder of the game.
Morehead State was hampered by its inability to knock down three-pointers as the Eagles finished 3-of-19. MSU did drain 19-of-22 free throws and eventually out-rebounded Tech 39-35. TTUÂ held a 22-14 lead on rebounds at halftime.
Jerone Morton led MSU with a career-high 20 points, while
Tyler Brelsford netted 13. Tech had three players reach double figures, led by Jaylon Johnson with 14. Layton had 13, and Matthew Sells registered 12.Â
Tech outscored the host Eagles 27-6 on three-pointers, hitting nine from deep. Both teams struggled at times hitting consistent shots, but TTU held MSU to just 36 percent for the night overall.
The Eagles are idle this weekend before hosting Southeast Missouri next Thursday at 7:30 p.m. ET.
