Lewis finishes 3-for-3, but it is Not Enough as MSU Falls to NKU

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. -- The Morehead State Eagles got three hits out of freshman Kendra Lewis in a 10-5 loss to Northern Kentucky on Saturday in their fourth game of the Governors Classic.

Freshman Emma Solis (1-6) got the ball to start for Morehead State (1-17) and pitched one of her best games, allowing seven runs on seven hits with a season-high 6 strikeouts, but suffered the defeat.

In addition to her three hits, Lewis had a walk and two RBI to lead the Eagles. Freshman Sela Pickford furnished a noteworthy performance at the plate as well, going 1-for-3 with a walk and two RBI. Freshman Collins also helped out Morehead State, putting together one hit in four trips to the plate while adding a double and a walk.

MSU tied its second-highest total this season with 10 hits. Seven of the team's nine batters recorded at least one. In addition to Lewis, sophomore outfielder Maddy Christopher collected two; while freshman designated player Victoria Collins, senior center fielder Darlene Montoay, senior catcher Ilencia Lightbody, sophomore shortstop Sale Pickford and junior second baseman Jordan Donato each had one. Freshman first baseman Nyla Doiron also contributed by drawing two walks and scoring.

"We hit the ball well and Emma did a nice job on the mound, but again it was big innings that really hurt us," said MSU head coach Megan Griffith.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Eagles got the scoring started early, putting two runs on the board in the bottom the first inning with the game still scoreless. Pickford drove in two runs for Morehead State with a single, that scored Collins and Lewis.

The Norse failed to push any runs across before the Eagles offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning. Morehead State scored three runs in the frame, buoyed by a two-run single off the bat of Lewis, which brought the score to 5-0 in favor of the Eagles. The Eagles were unable to hold the lead, as Northern Kentucky scored 10 times over the remaining five innings to grab the 10-5 win.
