MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Led by a second place finish from freshman
Tavia Burgess, Morehead State Women's Golf had its best finish of the season this week as the Eagles took fourth place at the Golfweek/Stifel Spring Challenge on the grand strand in South Carolina.
Burgess turned in all three scorecards at par or better (which was 71 at Caledonia Golf and Fish Club this week) and finished at -4 for the 54 holes. She was just one stroke off of first place, carding her fourth career top 10 finish and second top-five effort. Burgess fashioned 67-71-71--209.
"I am so proud of Tavia for digging deep and finishing her last nine holes at 2 under par," said head coach
Stephanie Barker. "There are a handful of tricky finishing holes at Caledonia, as well as some swirling winds today. So overall, our team handled them quite well. We had a lot of great birdies as a team the first day and had our chances throughout the event. We have quite a bit to be proud of this week and will continue to focus on getting 1% better."
Second place was Burgess' best finish of any tournament in her first collegiate season. As a team, the Eagles led all 16 teams in total pars and par-3 scoring average.
The Eagles' unit scorecard concluded at 288-297-296--881.
MSU had one other top-25 effort as
Isabella Wiley carded 71-76-77--224 for 24th place. The remainder of the lineup included
Amelia Rae Greenlee at 26th place (76-76-73--225),
Hanna Montgomery in 42nd place (74-74-80--228) and
Tuva Marie Isebakke in 44th (78-76-75--229).
Hannah Curreri played as an individual and scored 85-83-82--250.Â
This marked the final event before the Ohio Valley Conference Championship, which is April 13-15 at the Fighting Joe Course of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail in Muscle Shoals, Ala. MSU won the tournament on that course in 2023.
