Baseball Falls at Marshall 10-0 in 7 Innings

Huntington, W.Va. -- Marshall broke out the bats and scored in bunches as the Herd beat Morehead State 10-0 Tuesday night at Jack Cook Field in Huntington, W.Va.

Morehead State (12-26/ 2-13 OVC) could manage only 3 hits against Marshall pitching.

Marshall (19-22/ 6-2 SBC) put up five runs in the bottom of the second on six hits, punctuated by Marshall shortstop Maika Niu's two-out, two RBI double that one-hopped the wall in right center.

The Herd added three more in the third, punctuated by center fielder Can Harthan's two-run triple down the right field line. Another pair in the fourth put Marshall up 10-0.

Marshall's Peyton Jackson (1-0) picked up the win. MSU's Ethan Davis (2-3) took the loss.

Morehead State will host Marshall Wednesday at Allen Field at Prefontaine Park in the return match of the series. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. ET. The game can be seen on ESPN+.

NOTABLE
  • JJ Dutton singled in the 7th, extending his hit streak to 17 games. He's hit safely in 28 of the last 30 games.
  • With a single in the first inning, shortstop Andy Cisneros extended his hit streak to six games.
  • Catcher Caden Sheridan threw out two would-be base stealers in the second inning, his 11th and 12th of the season, tying him with teammate Hunter Thomas; they rank third in the OVC. Their combined 26 would-be base thieves caught are tops in the OVC.
  • Sheridan doubled off the wall in left center in the sixth inning, his 11th of the season, which leads the team, and is tied for fifth in the OVC.
  • AJ Hacker threw 2.2 no-hit innings out of the bullpen. He faced eight batters, striking out five.
