MSU Women to Host SIUE Thursday

Morehead, Ky.-- The Morehead State women's basketball team continues its home stand and kicks off the second half of the Ohio Valley Conference schedule Thursday when it hosts SIUE in Johnson Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. ET. The game can be heard on the Eagle Sports Network (flagship WIVY 96.3 FM) with Tom Lewis and Wes Holland on the call. It can also be seen on ESPN+ with Jared Stacy and Dean Hardin.
 
Morehead State ran their win streak to three games with a 52-48 victory over Eastern Illinois Saturday. Laura Toffali led the Eagles with 22 points, hitting six of 11 from the floor and 10 of 12 from the free throw line. Kate Dike added 12 points. Marie Sepp led MSU with 10 rebounds and handed out five assists. The Eagles hit 18 of their 22 free throw attempts.
 
At 7-3 in conference play, Morehead State is tied with Lindenwood for third place in the OVC. MSU's record after the first ten conference games represents the best start to conference play since the 2018-19 squad posted an 8-2 mark. That team finished the season 24-11 and 13-5 in the OVC and made an appearance in the WNIT and knocked off Ohio State in the opening round. Southern Indiana and Western Illinois sit atop the conference standings at 8-2.
 
SIUE had four players finish in double figures and upended Tennessee Tech 67-63 Saturday in Edwardsville. Lauren Miller led the Cougars with 16 points. Syanne Mohamed notched a double double with 15 points and 15 rebounds. She also matched her career high with four blocked shots.
 
Kiyoko Proctor added 13 points and Macy Silvey chipped in 11. SIUE hit 52% (25-48) from the floor and 11-15 (73%) from the free throw line.
 
Morehead State beat SIUE 54-49 on January 3 in Edwardsville in the teams' first meeting this season. Kate Dike dominated in the game, scoring 29 points and pulling down 10 rebounds and spearheaded MSU's 44-14 advantage in points in the paint. Marie Sepp added 15 points, hitting seven of her 11 attempts from the floor. The Eagles hit 52% from the floor and took a season-low 11 three-point attempts in the game.
 
Lauren Miller led SIUE with 13 points. Kiyoko Proctor finished with 11 points. The Cougars forced 18 turnovers and committed 14 miscues. SIUE hit 14 of 16 from the free throw line.

NOTABLE
  • Morehead State is averaging 60.3 points per game in Ohio Valley Conference play, ranking seventh in the conference. The Eagles are allowing an average of 59.8 points per game, which ranks third in the league.
  • In all games, MSU is averaging 64.8 points per game, ranking seventh in the conference.
  • Nine of the 11 OVC women's basketball teams are averaging scoring fewer points per game in conference play compared to their overall season average. Western Illinois has the biggest swing at -6.2.  The two teams scoring more in conference play are Tennessee State at 58.5 (+1.2) and Eastern Illinois at 57.4 (+1.1).
  • Morehead State ranks third in the OVC shooting 41.4% from the floor through their first 10 conference games. The Eagles also rank third in OVC limiting opponents to a 38.2% accuracy.
  • Morehead State has let 543 three-pointers fly so far this season, averaging 25.9 three-balls per game. That is the most in the Ohio Valley Conference and ranks 31st in the nation in Division I.
  • In conference play, the Eagles rank third averaging 21.3 treys per game. Tennessee Tech has let the most treys fly in league games at 24.3 attempts per game and Eastern Illinois is second at 21.9. SIUE is fourth in the OVC averaging 20 threes per game.
  • Morehead State ranks fifth in the conference in league play making an average of 5.8 three-pointers per game. SIUE ranks third with a 6.2 rate. Tennessee Tech leads the conference at 8.1 made treys per game (in conference play).
  • In league play, the Eagles are averaging pulling down 30.7 rebounds per game, with a -3.0 rebounding margin, which ranks eighth in the OVC. SIUE's +3.5 rebound margin ranks fourth in the league.
  • Morehead State has improved their free throw percentage to 69.4%. That ranks ninth in the OVC. In conference the games, the Eagles are shooting 73.0%, which ranks eighth.
  • The Eagles have been excellent at the line the last two games: Saturday against Eastern Illinois, MSU hit 18-22 (81.8%). Last Thursday against Western Illinois, Morehead State hit 16 of 18 (88.9%) at the line. Morehead State's season-high is 92.9%, when the Eagles hit 13 of 14 against UT Martin January 8.
  • Kate Dike leads Morehead State averaging 14.7 points and 7.0 rebounds per game, ranking sixth in the conference in both categories. In conference play, she is averaging 15.8 points (6th in the OVC) and 7.9 rebounds per game (5th in the OVC).
  • Dike ranks fourth in the OVC shooting 50.8% from the floor. She has posted double-figures in points a team-high 15 games and has notched six double-doubles this season.
  • Laura Toffali led the Eagles with 22 points Saturday against Eastern Illinois, just two points from matching her career high. It was the fifth game this season Toffali scored 20+ points, and her 14th game in double figures.
  • Toffali is second on the team averaging 12.6 points per game (14th in the OVC). In conference games.
  • Toffali is shooting 67.7% at the free throw line this season (14 in the OVC). Through the Eagles' first 10 conference games, she is shooting 75.8% at the line (15th in the OVC). Last week, she was deadly at the line; she hit all six of her tries against Western Illinois last Thursday and went 10-12 Saturday against Eastern Illinois.
  • Toffali recorded two steals Saturday against EIU giving her 57 on the season. That's the most in the OVC and ranks 23rd in the country.
  • Marie Sepp leads the OVC with 102 assists. Her 4.9 assists per game rate ranks 44th in the country.
  • Sepp ranks 17th in the OVC averaging 5.9 rebounds per game in conference games. She tied her career high with 10 rebounds last Thursday against Western Illinois.
  • Sepp posted her first double last Thursday against Western Illinois with 13 points and 10 rebounds. She posted the first triple-double in a decade when she put up 12 points, 10 rebounds and 13 assists against Murray State December 3.
  • In their first 10 conference games, the Eagles posted a 5-1 record when Sepp scored in double figures. In the four games she did not post double-digit points, the Eagles went 2-2.
  • There have been 23 triple-doubles posted this season in NCAA Division I women's basketball. TCU Olivia Miles has notched four, the only player with more than one. Other than Sepp's, MSU has a connection to another: former Eagle Kate Novik, now at DePaul, put up 12 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists against UMass-Lowell on December 11.
  • Violet McNece scored a career-high 18 points last Thursday against Western Illinois. She shot seven of nine from the floor and four of her six three-point shots. She ranks ninth in the OVC with 32 made three-pointers.
  • Landon Forbes ranks 14th in the OVC with 32 assists (1.5 assists per game). In conference play, she ranks 11th in the league averaging 2.9 assists per game.
     
SCOUTING THE COUGARS

SIUE is mentored by Samantha Quigley Smith, who is in her fifth season in Edwardsville. She has a 43-99 record at SIUE.

The Cougars average 61.9 points per game, ranking eighth in the OVC. Their 58.2 points allowed per game are the second-fewest in the league. SIUE ranks fourth in the OVC with a +3.5 rebound margin. The Cougars' -4.5 turnover margin in conference play ranks 10th in the league.
  • Freshman Lauren Miller paces SIUE averaging 12.7 points per game, ranking 11th in the OVC. She ranks 10th in the OVC averaging 2.7 assists per game.
  • Kiyoko Proctor ranks 18th in the OVC averaging 12.2 points per game. Her 80.3% from the free throw line ranks ninth in the OVC.
  • Macy Silvey ranks second in the OVC shooting 36.4% from three-point range. She averages 2.6 three-pointers made per game, also ranking second in the OVC.
  • Syanne Mohamed ranks third in the OVC averaging 8.5 rebounds per game. Her 18 blocked shots are tied for sixth-most in the league.
