MSU Women Open Home Week with UT Martin

Morehead, Ky. -- After a 2-0 road trip last week, Morehead State returns home to square off with UT Martin Thursday in Ellis T. Johnson Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.  ET. The game can be heard on the Eagle Sports Network (flagship WIVY 96.3 FM).
 
The game is one of several in the Ohio Valley Conference this season as part of a television package with Gray Media and can be watched on WKYT 27.3 THE365 and WBGS 34.3 TN Valley Sports. It can also be seen on ESPN+.
 
Morehead State is coming off a 54-49 win over SIUE Saturday in Edwardsville. The Eagles evened their record in the Ohio Valley Conference to 2-2, tied for sixth in the conference standings. Kate Dike posted her fourth double-double of the season with 29 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Eagles. Marie Sepp added 15. MSU got off to a sluggish start but used an 11-point run to end the opening quarter ahead 15-12 and never trailed the remainder of the game. The Eagles shot over 50% from the floor for the third consecutive game and held SIUE to just 29% shooting from the floor.
 
UT Martin capped off last week with a 58-51 win over Eastern Illinois Saturday in Martin, running their OVC record to 3-1 and putting them in a tie for first in the conference standings with four other teams. Kenley McCarn led the Skyhawks with 21 points. Zy Thompson tossed in 14 and Brittani Wells added 10. UTM used a big second quarter in which they outscored EIU 21-9 to hold onto the victory. The Skyhawks were good at the free throw line, going 23-31 for the game and were clutch in the final period making 10 of 12 charity tosses.

NOTABLE
  • A game after the Eagles put up a season-low 12 three-point shots at Lindenwood Thursday, Morehead State attempted just 11 Saturday at SIUE, making just one. Morehead State hoisted a season-high 43 three-point attempts last Sunday against Kentucky Christian, making 18 and just missing tying the program record of 19 set in 2013 against Berea College.
  • Morehead State has put up 396 three-pointers this season and leads the Ohio Valley Conference averaging 26.4 three-point attempts per game. That ranks 31st in the country in NCAA Division I. The Eagles are hitting 28.3 percent from beyond the arc, which ranks 8th in the OVC.
  • Morehead State is averaging 7.5 three-point shots made per game, which ranks second in the OVC behind Lindenwood's 8.0 treys per game. Violet McNece leads MSU averaging 1. treys per game (9th in OVC). Anja Ekstrom averages 1.5 three-pointers per game (14th in OVC).
  • MSU ranks 7th in the conference averaging 65.7 points per game. Western Illinois leads the OVC scoring at an 80.2 points per game clip. UT Martin ranks fifth in the OVC scoring 68.9 points per game.
  • The Eagles shot 52% from the floor Saturday at SIUE, their third straight game hitting over half of their shots. The Eagles are averaging 42.0% from the floor this season, ranking third in the OVC. UT Martin ranks fifth in the OVC, hitting at a 41.1% rate.
  • Defensively, these two teams are in the top half in opponents' field goal percentage. The Skyhawks ranks second in the conference at 36%, while MSU ranks fourth at 38.7% opponents' accuracy.
  • The Eagles out-rebounded SIUE Saturday 30-29, winning the rebounding battle for the third straight game. MSU 5-0 this season when they win the battle on the boards.
  • Kate Dike leads the Eagles averaging 14.3 points (6th in OVC) and 6.9 rebounds per game (7th in OVC). Dike had a monster game on Saturday at SIUE, posting 29 points and 10 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season. She hit 12 of 18 from the floor and four of her seven free throws.
  • Dike leads Morehead State hitting 39.5% (15-38) from three-point range. Last season she did not attempt a single trey.
  • Laura Toffali is second on the club averaging 12.9 points per game (T-12th in the OVC). In MSU's four conference games, Toffali has averaged 13.8 points per game. The Santavilla, Italy native leads the OVC averaging 2.87 steals per game. She has tallied 43 thefts this season. Last Sunday against Kentucky Christian, she had nine steals, believed to be the program record. She had back-to-back games (Nov. 22 vs. USC-Upstate and Nov. 26 vs Eastern Kentucky) where she racked up five thefts.
  • Marie Sepp leads the Ohio Valley Conference averaging 5.07 assists per game. That ranks T-38th in the country in Division I. The Eagles rank 2nd in the OVC averaging 14.6 assists per game.
  • Sepp posted the Eagles' first triple-double in a decade in Morehead State's 85-78 loss to Murray State on December 3. The senior from Estonia posted 12 points, 10 rebounds and set a new career-high with 13 assists.
  • McNece leads Morehead State with 11 blocked shots this season, tied for ninth in the OVC.
  • Josefine Enander had a breakout game Sunday against Kentucky Christian, scoring a career-high 23 points. The sophomore hit seven of her eight three-point attempts and went 8-13 from the field. She also set career highs with five rebounds, four assists and four steals. She was named the OVC Newcomer of the Week for her performance.
 
 
SCOUTING THE SKYHAWKS
 
The Skyhawks are a young squad: 10 of the 14 players on the roster are listed as freshmen or sophomores. UT Martin ranks fifth in the OVC averaging 68.9 points per game. The Skyhawks rank seventh in the conference giving up 63.6 points per game. UTM is coming off a big week last week, knocking off Western Illinois 86-78 in a double-overtime thriller and capping it off with a 58-51 win over Eastern Illinois Saturday.
 
 
  • The Skyhawks are led by Kenley McCarn, averaging 15.8 points per game, ranking fifth in the OVC. She ranks sixth in the OVC averaging 1.92 threes per game. She is a 34.7% shooter from beyond the arc.
  • Zy Thompson averages 11.9 points per game, second on the club. Her 6.8 rebounds per game this season ranks eighth in the OVC. She was named the OVC Newcomer of the Week Tuesday for her play last week.  She posted her third double-double of the season Thursday against Western Illinois with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Saturday against Eastern Illinois, she netted 14 points and pulled down eight boards.
  • Sidni Middleton was named the OVC Freshman of the Week Tuesday, after tying her career high with 25 points in the Skyhawks' win over Western Illinois Thursday.  She is the third Skyhawk averaging in double figures at 10.8 points per game.
