Women's Hoops Gearing Up to Tussle with Southern Indiana Tuesday

Morehead State wraps up its home schedule Tuesday when the Eagles host Southern Indiana in Johnson Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. ET. The game can be heard on the Eagle Sports Network (flagship WIVY 96.3 FM) with Tom Lewis and Wes Holland on the call. It can be seen on ESPN+ with Jared Stacy and Dean Hardin describing the action.
 
Morehead State comes into the game in fourth place in the Ohio Valley Conference standings at 12-6 in league play. Southern Indiana is a game ahead of the Eagles in third place in the standings at 13-5. Morehead State is two games ahead of Little Rock in the standings: the Trojan are fifth in the conference at 10-8.
 
The Eagles are coming off a 74-53 loss at OVC-leading Western Illinois Saturday in Macomb, Illinois. The game was tied at 49-49 at the end of the third quarter, but MSU managed to hit only two of their 11 field goal attempts in the final 10 minutes. Western Illinois heated up in the final frame, hitting seven of 11 from the floor, including four of six from three-point range. The Leathernecks also hit 10 of 12 from the free throw line in the final stanza.
 
Southern Indiana bounced back from its 64-39 loss at Western Illinois Thursday with a 72-63 victory over Eastern Illinois Saturday. Ali Saunders led all scorers with 26 points, hitting six of nine from three-point range. Chloe Gannon added 16 points and Sophia Loden added 10.
 
The Screaming Eagles got off to a fast start hitting 58% from the floor and led 28-13 after the first quarter. USI shot 30-65 (46%) from the floor and hit six of its 17 three-point shots (35%). 
 
Morehead State and Southern Indiana met on December 20 in Evansville, with the Screaming Eagles taking a 78-59 win. Ali Saunders poured in a career-high 35 points, hitting 10-22 from the field, including six of 13 from three-point range. She also hit all nine of her free throw attempts.
 
The sister duo of Chloe and Channah Gannon added 15 and 12 points, respectively.
 
Morehead State was led by Laura Toffali with 20 points. Kate Dike added 12. Morehead State was forced into 25 turnovers, resulting in a 33-12 Southern Indiana advantage in points off turnovers. USI also dominated on the glass, 40-27.

SCOUTING THE SCREAMING EAGLES
 
Southern Indiana is coached by Rick Stein, who is in his 27th season at the helm of the Screaming Eagles. He has a record of 490-282. Against Morehead State, he is 6-1.
 
Southern Indiana averages 67.9 points per game in conference play ranking third in the OVC. Defensively, the Screaming Eagles top the conference giving up just 59.1 points per game. The Screaming Eagles are the best rebounding team in the conference with a +6.2 rebounding margin in league play.
 
  • USI is led in scoring by guard Ali Saunders who is averaging 17.5 points per game this season. In conference play, Saunders averages 19 points per game. She is the second-leading scorer in the OVC. She leads the conference, hitting 91.3% from the free throw line, which ranks sixth in the country.
