Eagle Women's Hoops Treks to West Tennessee to Take on UT Martin

Morehead, Ky.-- Morehead State wraps up their road trip Saturday when they visit UT Martin.  Tipoff in the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. ET. The game can be heard on the Eagle Sports Network (flagship WIVY 96.3 FM) with Tom Lewis and Wes Holland on the call. The game can also be watched on ESPN+.
 
Morehead State goes into Martin riding a six-game winning streak after its 71-57 win over Southeast Missouri Thursday night in Cape Girardeau. The tandem of Landon Forbes and Violet McNece led the Eagles with 18 points apiece. Kate Dike, limited to under 18 minutes of play due to early foul trouble, finished with 14 points. Laura Toffali added 11 for Morehead State.
 
The Eagles hit 45% from the field and 40% (10-25) from three-point range. MSU hit 13 of 17 for 77% from the free throw line. Morehead State's 71 points were the highest total in conference play this season.
 
This is the third game of the week for UT Martin. The Skyhawks were defeated 68-53 by Little Rock Tuesday night in Martin. It was a tough shooting night for the Skyhawks: UTM shot just 18-55 (33%) from the floor, including 7-27 (26%) from three-point range. UT Martin was led by Zy Thompson with 13 points. Sidni Middleton added 11 and Brittani Wells chipped in 10.
 
Thursday, the Skyhawks rebounded with a 66-58 upset win over Southern Indiana. UTM took advantage of a cold shooting start from Southern Indiana and led 16-9 after the first quarter. The Skyhawks scorched the nets in the second quarter, hitting over 50% from the floor and four of their eight three-point attempts. UTM led by 12 at the intermission, 35-23.
 
Southern Indiana rallied and tied the game at 50 with 6:25 to go with a 7-2 start to the final period. The Skyhawks responded with a five-point run and iced the game at the free throw line. UTM hit 12 of their 18 free throws in the final quarter and their final eight in a row. Brittani Wells led the Skyhawks with 18 points. Zy Thompson and Kenley McCarn added 12 points apiece. 
 
In the Morehead State's first matchup against UT Martin this season, the Eagles got off to a hot start, hitting five of their eight three-point attempts in the first quarter, led the Skyhawks 25-12 after the first ten minutes, and beat the Skyhawks 67-49 on January 8 in Johnson Arena. The Eagles placed four players in double figures, led by Landon Forbes, who notched a double-double with 16 points and a career-high 10 rebounds. Kate Dike and Josefine Enander added 14 points apiece and Marie Sepp dropped in 12.
 
The Eagles forced 19 Skyhawk turnovers in the game while committing 12 and had a 22-12 edge in points off turnovers. The Eagles outrebounded UTM 37-30, including an 11-5 advantage on the offensive glass.
 
MSU was excellent from the free-throw line, hitting 13 of their 14 tries for 93%.  Dike hit all six of her free throws and Laura Toffali went 4-4 from the line.
 
Zy Thompson led the Skyhawks with 16 points. She hit six of her seven shots from the floor and went 4-8 from the free throw line. Kenley McCarn added 13 for UTM.

NOTABLE
  • Morehead State has won six games in a row for the first time since the 2018-19 season when the Eagles ran off eight straight wins on their way to post a record of 24-11 (13-5 OVC). The streak ran from January 12 to February 7, 2019. It began with an 85-62 win at Tennessee State and ended with a 71-55 win at home over Tennessee State.
  • In the Eagles' current streak, they have hit 79% from the free throw line. MSU is hitting free throws at a 70.5% rate this season, ranking seventh in the OVC. In conference play, MSU is averaging 74.3%, ranking sixth in the conference.
  • Landon Forbes hit 15-16 (93.8%) from the line in the last six outings. Laura Toffali hit 22-27 (82%), Marie Sepp shot 10-13 (76.9%) and Kate Dike hit 27-36 (75%).
  • Morehead State has averaged 12.0 turnovers per game in the last six games. This season, the Eagles average 16.2 turnovers per game: in conference play, MSU has turned the ball over at a 15.1 turnovers per game clip, the fourth lowest rate in the OVC.
  • Morehead State committed six turnovers last Saturday against Lindenwood, the fewest since MSU posted five against Western Illinois on January 27, 2024. The Eagles committed 18 turnovers Thursday at SEMO, their highest total since their last loss, when they coughed up the ball 19 times at Tennessee State.
  • Morehead State averages 62.1 points per game in conference play, ranking sixth in the Ohio Valley Conference. The Eagles average allowing 59.9 points per game in OVC games, ranking second in the league.
  • In conference games, Morehead State ranks third in the OVC, hitting 41% from the floor. From three-point range, the Eagles rank sixth in the conference at 29.5%.
  • In their six-game win streak, the Eagles outscored their opponents by a combined 219-172 in the second half. The Eagles were outscored 175-167 in the first half of those games.
  • Dike has averaged 17.2 points per game during the last six contests. She started the streak with 24 points at Tennessee Tech. She posted 26 last Thursday night against SIUE along with 12 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season. She battled foul trouble Thursday at SEMO, logging just under 18 minutes of game time, but posted 14 points.
  • Dike leads Morehead State averaging 14.9 points and 7.0 rebounds per game ranking sixth in both categories in the OVC. In conference play, she ranks fifth in the league with 16.2 points per game and ranks fourth in the OVC pulling down 8.2 rebounds per game.
  • Dike ranks fourth in the OVC, hitting 49.6% from the floor. She leads MSU hitting 38.3% (23-60) from three-point range on the season. She ranks 13th in the OVC hitting 70.3% from the free throw line. Her 10 blocked shots in conference play rank ninth in the OVC.
  • Toffali is averaging 12.3 points per game this season (14th in the OVC). She has scored 20+ points five times this season, setting her career-high of 24 against Eastern Kentucky November 26. Last Saturday against Eastern Illinois, she posted 22 points and a new career-high with 10 free throws.
  • Toffali leads the OVC with 70 steals. That is the 10th-highest total in program history.  It also ranks tied for 15th in the nation. Her 2.9 steals per game rate also tops the OVC and ranks tied for 29th nationally.
  • Toffali's 68.4% free throw percentage ranks 15th in the OVC. She has hit 76.5% (52-68) from the line in conference games which ranks 13th in the OVC.
  • Sepp leads the OVC with 119 assists on the season. That ranks tied for 29th in the country. Her 4.96 assists per game average also tops the OVC and ranks tied for 36th in the nation.
  • Sepp ranks 18th in the OVC averaging 5.2 rebounds per game this season. In the last six games, she has led the Eagles averaging 6.5 rebounds per game.
  • Morehead State is 7-1 so far in conference games when Sepp finished in double figures scoring. In games where she did not, the Eagles went 3-2.
  • McNece ranks t-8th in the OVC with 38 three-pointers made this season.  She tied her career-high with 18 points Thursday at Southeast Missouri, hitting four of her six three-point attempts.
  • McNece also recorded 14 blocked shots this season (15th in the OVC).
  • McNece has hit 18 of 22 (81.8%) from the free throw line this season.
  • Forbes posted 18 points in MSU's win over Southeast Missouri Thursday night, her eighth double-figure outing of the season. In conference play, she is averaging 8.2 points per game. In league play, she has hit 27 of 30 free throws (90%).
  • Forbes leads the OVC with a 1.6 Assists to Turnover ratio in league play. She is averaging 3.2 assists per game in conference play (t-6 in the OVC).
  • Forbes' 43 steals rank eighth in the OVC. Her 27 steals in conference play are ranked t-7 in the conference.
 
SCOUTING THE SKYHAWKS
 
Kevin McMillan is in his 17th season as the UT Martin head coach. He has posted a record of 306-221 in west Tennessee. Against Morehead State, McMillan is 17-11.
 
UT Martin ranks fifth in the conference averaging 63.3 points per game in conference games. The Skyhawks rank eighth in the league allowing 64.2 points per game in OVC games. UTM ranks last in the OVC with a -6.7 rebounding margin. The Skyhawks rank second in the OVC averaging 9.6 steals per game.
 
  • The Skyhawks' leading scorer is Kenley McCarn. The redshirt junior averages 15.9 points per game ranking fourth in the OVC. Her 17.6 points per game in conference play are third-most in the conference. Her 6.2 rebounds per game in conference play leads UTM and ranks t-15th in the OVC. She is a 33% shooter from three-point range for the season, hitting 40 of 122. Those 39 treys made are the seventh-most in the OVC.
  • Zy Thompson averages 10.6 points per game (8.6 in OVC games). She is a 57% shooter from the floor for the season. Her 5.8 rebounds per game on the season lead the Skyhawks. Thompson set career highs with an impressive 26-15 double-double at Arkansas State on December 6.
  • Junior college transfer Brittani Wells ranks fourth in the OVC with 78 assists, averaging 3.7 helpers per game. In conference play, she ranks third in the league averaging 3.9 assists per game. She notched a season-high seven assists on New Year's Day against Western Illinois. She scored a season-high 16 points at Eastern Illinois last Thursday at Eastern Illinois.
