Eagles Lead Early but Fall to Lindenwood 5-4 in Series Opener

Sheridan Leads MSU Attack Going 4-4 with his 10th Home Run of the Season

Morehead, Ky. -- Morehead State got out to an early lead and threatened in the late innings but fell to Lindenwood 5-4 in the opener of the Eagles' three-game series with the Lions Friday night at Allen Field at Prefontaine Park in Morehead.

Morehead State (18-19, 5-8 OVC) scored a run in the bottom of the first to grab an early lead. Davis Germann slapped a one-triple into the right field corner and scored when Aubrey Kearns followed him with a double down the right field line.
 
The Eagles plated three more runs in the second inning. Brayton Coomer led off with an infield single and Griffin Olson walked. Jaden Correa advanced the runners with an infield single. Caden Sheridan lined a pitch over the screen in straightaway-center field to push the MSU advantage to 4-0.
 
Lindenwood (19-18, 6-7 OVC) got three runs in the fourth inning. The Lions got a leadoff walk, then after two outs were recorded, a walk and a two-out, two-run double by Filip Sarota. After another walk, Tanner Simpson drove in another run to trim the lead to 4-3.
 
The Lions took the lead for good in the sixth, scoring two runs on two doubles and a sacrifice fly for the final margin of the game.
 
Lindenwood starter John Newell (5-3) picked up the win. He threw seven innings, scattering 11 hits in allowing four runs, all earned. He walked one and struck out nine Eagle batters. In his last five innings, he allowed six hits.
 
MSU starter Callum McGill pitched four innings, pitched to one runner in the fifth. He gave up three runs on six hits. He walked two and struck out five Lion batters.
 
The second game of the series is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. ET, Saturday. Stormy weather is forecast for the northeastern Kentucky area on Saturday afternoon: officials are considering a time change Saturday. Any changes will be published at www.msueagles.com and on the schools' social media accounts.
 
NOTABLE
  • Morehead State out-hit Lindenwood 15-12. It was the eighth game in the last nine that MSU has tallied double-digit hits. Morehead State is now 16-5 when out-hitting its opponent.
  • The Eagles left 11 runners on base; the Lions stranded 10.
  • Sheridan's 10th home run of the season in the second inning was just the first of four hits for the sophomore catcher. He also added three singles in going 4-4 in the game.
  • Kearns' double in the first inning extended his hitting streak to 10 games.
  • McCubbin went 2-5 with a double and extended his reached-base streak to 17 games. It was his 14th multiple-hit game
  • Kyle Krupp and Germann and Coomer all went 2-5 in the game.
  • Griffin Olson went 2-3 at the plate with a walk. He's hit safely in seven of the last nine games.
  • Alex Miller and Devin Costa pitched the final five innings out of the bullpen. Miller allowed two runs on four hits in 2-1/3 innings. He walked one and struck out two batters. Costa got the last out in the seventh and pitched two shutout innings, allowing two hits and recorded two strikeouts.
