Morehead, Ky. -- The Morehead State Soccer team fell to Lindenwood in the conference play opener in St. Charles, Mo. at Hunter Stadium, with a final score of 3-0.

The Eagles loss today is only the second time all season in which they've have been shutout. 

"The game was a game of moments & mistakes," said Head Coach Paul Cox. "We didn't convert our very good moments and our mistakes were punished with good finishes from Lindenwood. The first and second goal anyway. Wasn't a 3-0 game but we allowed it to happen which is very disappointing."

MSU and Lindenwood kicked off today's contest at 2 p.m. ET in the midst of a mid-70s day with overall great weather.

The game's first chance at a score was in the ninth minute, when Morehead State's Jade Walton fired a shot from the edge of the penalty arc, forcing Lions' goalkeeper Caroline Ritter to make her first save of the contest.

In the 19th minute, Lindenwood strung together three terrific passes in MSU's defensive half. Mackenzie Compton tapped a pass to Sami Roggenkamp in stride, who paused before playing it backward to Kaylee Conoyer. Conoyer then slipped the ball past Allie Lammers and into the left side of the net, giving the Lions a 1-0 lead.

Within the next three minutes, Lindenwood fired three more shots, one saved by Lammers and two off target.

In the 28th minute, Eagle junior Ashton Lynam lined up for a free kick from 30 yards out and sent a shot toward the top-left corner of the goal, but Ritter made an unbelievable save to keep the Lions ahead, 1-0.

In the 34th minute, Maddy Vasiloff broke free in front of the MSU goal, creating a one-on-one opportunity with Lammers, who made a fingertip save to deflect the shot off target.

Lindenwood took its 1-0 lead into halftime while out shooting the Eagles, 6-3.

Just two minutes and 22 seconds into the second half, Anna Johnson sent a cross in front of the Eagles' goal that was cleared by MSU's Carly Gilbert. However, Gilbert's header fell directly to Samantha Steele, who capitalized with an absolute strike past Lammers to give the Lions a 2-0 lead.

Morehead State and Lindenwood would trade a few shot attempts for another 35 minutes, none of which were on target.

In the 83rd minute, Lindenwood cleared the ball from its own 30-yard line, sending it all the way down the field. Lammers came out of the goal to clear the ball, but misplayed it, leaving Compton alone in front of an open net. Compton calmly tapped the ball in to extend the Lions' lead to 3-0.

With just 30 seconds remaining, Ava Peck launched a desperation shot toward the goal in hopes of preventing the shutout, but Ritter made the save, and the Lions held on for a 3-0 victory.

The Lions finished with 13 shots compared to the Eagles' seven. They also led in shots on goal (7-3) and corner kicks (5-3). Lammers led Ritter in saves, 4-3. Lindenwood was called for three offsides and each team received one yellow card. MSU led in fouls, 12-10. 

Lindenwood improved to 5-4-2 and 1-0 in conference play, while Morehead State dropped to 5-7 and 0-1 in conference play.

Morehead State will be back in action at home against Southern Illinois University Edwardsville on Sunday, Oct. 4.
