Blocks and Aces Propel Volleyball Eagles Past EKU, 3-1

MOREHEAD, Ky. - Freshman Annie Gruenschlaeger led a relentless blocking attack for the Morehead State volleyball team Thursday night as she tied the school single match record with 10 block assists, and the Eagles landed 12 aces as they rallied to knock off visiting Eastern Kentucky 3-1 (23-25, 25-15, 25-22, 25-15) at Wetherby Gym.

Gruenschlaeger, who lead the league and ranks in the top 20 nationally in total blocks, ran her season block assist total to 103 tonight and her overall total for the year to 123. She also smashed down nine kills and made no errors on 16 swings for a team best .562 hitting percentage. She had some help at the net as well. Junior Holly Evans totaled six blocks, and redshirt sophomore Emma Keough chipped in on four rejections.

On offense, the Eagles shook off a set one loss to hit higher than .300 for the rest of the night. Kaitlin Craven had a double-double of 11 kills and 12 digs, and Evans landed 10 kills while hitting .385.. Keough hit .280 and had nine spikes. Craven, Keough, and Liz Schuler each had had three of the season best 12 aces.

Eastern Kentucky came out on fire, hitting .424 (18 kills, 4 errors) as they rallied to win the opening set. However, from there, MSU held the Colonels to negative numbers in sets two and four. Lauren Snyder led all players with 13 kills to go along with 14 digs, while Lindsey Loescher notched 11. Abby O'Connor topped all athletes with 20 digs.

The Eagles got 44 assists and nine digs from setter Kirstie Brangers, while libero Kristina Schoo topped the defense with 13 digs. MSU never made more than four attack errors in either set.

Morehead State hosts newest OVC member school SIU Edwardsville on Friday at 7 p.m. The Cougars are not eligible for OVC competition yet, so the match will count as a non-conference contest.
