MOREHEAD, Ky. - For the second straight match, the Morehead State women’s soccer team battled to a 0-0 draw to earn one point in the Ohio Valley Conference standings.
Offensive threats were far and few between in the contest between the Eagles and instate rival Eastern Kentucky, partly because of rainy weather on the evening.
MSU maintained the majority of the possession in the first half, but were unable to turn its possession into quality chances. Senior
Lauren Seebach had the best chance in the first half after the ball fell to her feet after a scrum off a corner kick. EKU goalkeeper Stephanie Lynch was out of position and Seebach attempted a turnaround shot at the open net. However, Seebach’s strike found the outside of the net resulting in a harmless EKU goal kick.
As the first stanza ended, MSU lead in shots by a margin of 7-2. Lynch made four saves in the half and Eagle goalkeeper
Lily Meisner totaled two stops.
The second half was more evenly contested, as both squads were able to possess the ball. Neither team could find the back of the net however and regulation ended with a nil-nil score. Meisner was forced to make four saves in the period, while Lynch stopped two MSU attempts on goal.
Action was frantic in the first overtime period. MSU’s
Devan Jordan had the most exciting play of the game when she found herself racing Lynch to a ball near the end line. Jordan was able to beat the Colonel net minder to the ball crossing into the six yard box as she and Lynch collided. But the Eagles had little support in the area and the cross was cleared away. Lynch and Jordan were shaken up after the play and Lynch needed assistance off the field. Alex Raich replaced her in goal for EKU.
EKU made a strong effort for the win when Katie Collar took an optimistic strike on net for 35 yards out. The high arcing shot nearly beat Meisner who leaped to punch the ball away to safety.
Neither team came close the rest of the way although the Eagles were able to force several corners in the final 15 minutes of play.
Meisner ended the contest with seven saves and recorded her fourth shutout of the season. Lynch totaled five saves.
Bethany Davidson led the Eagle offensive attack, firing three total shots and two shots on target.
The tie moves MSU to 5-6-3 overall and 2-0-2 in the OVC, while EKU moves to 4-7-2 and 1-1-2.
