MOREHEAD, Ky. – Illinois State scored five times in the first half and defeated Morehead State in soccer action Sunday afternoon at Jayne Stadium. The loss drops the Eagles’ record to 4-6-1 on the season. ISU improves to 4-5-1.
The Redbirds started the scoring in the 16th minute when Rachel Bostick placed a header into the net off of a Danielle Mutters free kick. MSU would continue to struggle with corner kicks and set pieces throughout the match as three of ISU’s four other first half goals came after Morehead State failed to clear loose balls after free or corner kicks.
Lily Meisner recorded five saves in net and Jillian Birchmeier fired a team-high three shots. The Redbirds outshot the Eagles 24-8 in the match.
MSU head coach Warren Lipka was disappointed with his team’s efforts in the first half but thought there were improvements made after halftime.
“We obviously were outplayed play in the first half. I thought we came out and played much better in the second half. It was a tough loss but hopefully we can take something from this game that will help us improve for our conference games.”
Morehead State returns to action Friday when they battle Jacksonville State at Jayne Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
