MOREHEAD, Ky.—Morehead State women’s soccer dominated control of the ball and scored twice early in the second half to beat Evansville, 2-1 Sunday afternoon in a non-conference match at Jayne Stadium.
The Eagles kept control of the ball for most of the game and kept the pressure on Evansville keepers junior Theresa Bagby and freshman Chaviel Harrison, compiling 28 total shots. The Aces racked up five total shots, but four of those came in the closing minutes of the second half.
Morehead took 14 first-half shots, but finally converted a shot early in the second half following a corner kick, a rebound found its way to sophomore
Devan Jordan, who ripped a blast past Harrison to give Morehead a 1-0 lead.
Five minutes later, with the Aces short a player because of a red card, the Eagles doubled up when Jordan scooped up another rebound and tapped it to sophomore
Jillian Birchmeier. Birchmeier kept pace with Jordan in the season goal total, firing a hard shot past Harrison for her fourth goal of the season and a 2-0 MSU lead.
Evansville made a late offensive push, picking up three late shots, one of which, a header by freshman Abby Guerra following a corner kick by sophomore Sam Conrad, found the mark and cut the MSU lead in half. The Aces’ goal came with less than 2:30 to play and they were unable to find the equalizer.
MSU also held a decisive advantage in corner kicks, 11-4. Evansville made 17 saves, 10 by Bagby and seven by Harrison.
Morehead State improves to 2-4 and hosts Kentucky Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Jayne Stadium. Evansville fell to 1-3 and hosts Western Kentucky at 7 p.m. on Friday
