MOREHEAD, Ky. – The Morehead State women’s soccer team won a crucial Ohio Valley Conference soccer match 1-0 over Austin Peay Friday night in Jayne Stadium. With the win the Eagles improve to 8-6-1 overall, 5-0-1 in conference play, and now have clinched a berth in the OVC tournament which is scheduled for Nov. 4-5, 7.
MSU controlled play for the entire match, limiting the Govs to just five shots in the match. The Eagles sustained relentless pressure on the APSU backlines and came close to finding the back of the net multiple times.
Senior forward
Erin Adams created the first great opportunity in 3rd minute of play when she broke free past the APSU defense, but Gov goalkeeper Carley Newman made an impressive save on Adams shot.
Despite constant pressure and three shots on goal the Eagles and Govs went into the intermission tied nil-nil. Newman had three saves at the half, and Eagle goalkeeper
Lily Meisner had two.
MSU had another golden opportunity in the 56th minute when senior forward
Giuleana Lopez turned on the jets and out ran an APSU defender to the ball where she went one on one with Newman. Lopez fired a shot that went past Newman, but it rolled just wide of the goal.
In the 62nd minute Lopez won a ball on the left side of the box and was fouled as she was attempting to take a shot. Lopez was awarded a penalty kick and converted her opportunity as she beat Newman to the left and found the back of the net for her fifth goal of the season.
Meisner made three big saves in the game to thwart APSU chances and pitch her fourth straight shutout and her sixth of the season. Meisner recorded her eighth win of the season and now needs just one more win to tie the school record for wins a season at nine, which was done by Holly Beach in 2000. Newman stopped six Eagle shots.
The Eagles outshot the Govs 18-5 and held the advantage in kicks from the corner pocket 7-1. APSU was slapped with 11 fouls, while MSU had 4.
Jillian Birchmeier and Adams led MSU with five shots each and Lopez contributed four more.
Devan Jordan,
Sam Toepfer,
Brittany Kiracofe, and
Sam Corman each had one shot.
The Eagles are now unbeaten in eight of their last nine matches and dating back to the last regular season game in 2008, MSU is unbeaten in 18 of their last 19 OVC matches. With the win coach
Warren Lipka is now just two wins away from a milestone of 200 in his career, in just his second year with the Eagles Lipka is now 10-0-4 in OVC regular season matches.
The Eagles will now travel to Jacksonville, Ala., to face Jacksonville State. With a win the Eagles will clinch their second straight OVC regular season title and the right to host the OVC tournament at home in Jayne Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m.
