MSU Soccer Closes Out OVC Play at EKU

GAMENOTES | LIVE STATS

MOREHEAD, Ky. –
The Morehead State Eagle soccer team will travel to Richmond, Ky., to face Ohio Valley Conference in-state rival Eastern Kentucky on Sunday Oct. 24. Match time is slated for 1 p.m. The Eagles will look to do something that hasn’t been done in the OVC since 2000. If the Eagles defeat EKU they will have gone two straight seasons without losing an OVC regular season match. Eastern Illinois last did this in 1999 and 2000 going 5-0-0 in both years.

The Eagles have earned the right to host the OVC tournament at home in Jayne Stadium which will occur on Nov. 4-5, 7. MSU is unbeaten in nine of their last ten games and dating back to the last regular match in 2008, the Eagles are unbeaten in 19 of their last 20 OVC matches.

Morehead State is led up front by senior forwards Erin Adams and Giuleana Lopez. Adams is first in the OVC in goals (11), goals per game (0.69), and points (23), while Lopez is tied for eighth in goals (5), fourth in goals per game (0.45), and tied for second in assists (5). Lopez was also named last week’s OVC Offensive Player of the Week. Junior mid-fielder Sarah Phillip and senior defender Micaela Hornstein anchor a defense that has played absolutely superb since OVC play started. The Eagles are outscoring OVC opponents 13-1 and have only allowed 14 shots on goal in conference, seven of those 14 shots came in the 0-0 tie versus Eastern Illinois. Between the pipes for the Eagles is senior goalkeeper Lily Meisner who has recorded five straight shutouts for a total of seven on the year. With last Sunday’s win over Jacksonville State Meinser recorded her ninth victory which tied Holly Beach’s school record of nine back in 2000.

The Eastern Kentucky Colonels (7-7-2, 4-3-0) defeated Jacksonville State 5-0, before falling 1-0 to Austin Peay last weekend. EKU is led by Nicole Donnelly who has netted six goals and Carly Muller who is second on the team in points with seven. In goal for the Colonels is Stephanie Lynch who has boasted five shutouts and 68 saves. EKU is currently second in the OVC with a total of 12 points.

Warren Lipka, now in his second season at MSU, is just one win away from a milestone of 200 in his career. Lipka has a career record of 199-152-35 and is 11-0-4 in OVC regular season matches.

The Eagles will travel to Farmville, Va. to face non-conference opponent Longwood on Sunday Oct. 31, match time is slated for 1 p.m. This will mark the Eagles last regular season contest of the year. Morehead State will host the OVC tournament in Jayne Stadium on Nov. 4-5, 7.
