MOREHEAD, Ky. – The Morehead State baseball program inked two more early signees for the 2012 season Wednesday. Infielder Taylor Sears (Somerset, Ky.) and pitcher Aaron Goe (Dry Ridge, Ky.) signed National Letters of Intent and add their names to an already impressive list of early signings for the Eagle baseball program.
Sears, a talented defensive middle infielder and explosive hitter, batted .411 with 32 RBI and 32 stolen bases during his junior season at Somerset High School. He also hit .480 during his playing time with the highly competitive summer league team the Morse Mustangs.
“There are not enough great things I can say about Taylor. He is a very high character person and a great athlete,” said baseball coach Jay Sorg. “Defensively he will specialize in the middle infield but is versatile enough to play all around the diamond.”
Taylor has received many accolades during his high school career, including being named to the Area All-County team twice and Player of the Year once. He also participates in football, has been named team captain and has received the Area All-County Team Strong Safety award for the currently first-place ranked football team in Kentucky (Class 3-A).
Sorg expects Sears to be an offensive catalyst at the top of the order for years to come.
“I really like his left-handed bat early in the batting order. Taylor is fundamentally sound,” explained Sorg. “We know he has been well coached in both high school and summer baseball. We are thrilled to have him in our program.”
Right-handed pitcher Aaron Goe also signed today to become a future Eagle. Goe, a 4.0 student at Grant County High School, also showed an impressive pitching acumen compiling a 2.04 ERA with 59 strikeouts over 55.0 innings pitched during his junior season.
“Aaron rounds out an early signing period for us of strong arms,” stated Sorg. “He is a tall pitcher with a big frame, who we feel is going to fill out nicely over the next couple of years. He really made a big jump in development over the summer.”
Goe had the opportunity to pitch for the summer league Cincinnati Spikes under the tutelage of MSU baseball alum Trent Hanna, during which time he had a 1.60 ERA.
“He features a fastball that can reach into the low 90s and a big breaking ball,” said Sorg. “Aaron has an extreme amount of upside and certainly projects as a starter. Aaron is a strong student-athlete who we believe will be recognized both on the field and in the classroom during his time at Morehead State University.”
Aaron agrees that Morehead State will allow him to succeed both on and off the baseball field.
“I am looking forward to my time at Morehead State University,” said Goe. “I believe it is a great fit for me academically and athletically.”
Coach Sorg and his assistant coaches are excited about the student-athletes they have signed during the early signing period.
“We are very pleased with our early signing class,” said Sorg. “We were able to address our most immediate needs for next season. These guys allow us to move on as planned to the spring signing period. All of the men are outstanding players, students and people. We are confident that they will ensure the future success of our program.”
