CLARKSVILLE, Tenn.—Morehead State softball got a pair of three-hitters from its pitchers to sweep through Ohio Valley Conference foe Austin Peay Saturday afternoon at Lady Govs Field. The Eagles won game one 8-1 and took the second half of the twinbill 3-2.
MSU pitcher
Alex Gjevre, who won game one, also picked up a save in game two, her sixth of her career, setting an MSU record for saves in a career.
“Alex and Sarah pitched great today,” said MSU coach
Holly Bruder. “Defense was sharp and the hitting came out strong early today. We let up a bit offensively in game two, but good pitching and the defense held up.”
The Eagles (22-16, 12-4 OVC) scored three runs in the top of the fourth in game two to break a scoreless tie. Kayla Ashbrook tripled to centerfield, driving in
Amber Riddle, who had walked and pinch runner
Taylor Sherritt, who was substituting for Butler after the latter singled.
Austin Peay scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to close the gap on a pair of RBI singles by Brittany Williams and Shine Huwe that scored Detra Farley and Tia Johnson. But Gjevre, who replaced
Sarah Funston with the tying run in scoring position, struck out the Lady Govs last batter in the sixth and then struck out the side in the seventh to preserve the MSU sweep.
Ashbrook led the Eagles at the plate in game two with a 2-for-3 performance with two RBI. Funston earned the win, throwing 5.2 innings, allowing three hits and two runs with nine strikeouts. Gjevre picked up the record save with 1.1 innings pitched and four strikeouts.
Morgan Brewer took the loss for APSU, throwing four innings, allowing five hits and three runs, all earned. The Lady Govs only managed three hits, spread among three players.
In game one, the Eagles took an early lead in the first, extended it in the second and cruised from there.
Kayla Brill started the first-inning scoring by jacking a solo home run to left center.
Rebecca Butler’s single to second base ended up chasing Brewer, who started the game and gave up three hits against the first three batters she faced. Riddle singled and
Ashley Archer reached on a fielder’s choice that moved everyone over. Ashbrook followed with a two-RBI single that plated Archer and Riddle.
In the second inning Butler reached on a fielder’s choice sacrifice that scored Anna Sommer, who led off with a single. Riddle then doubled, driving in
Elizabeth Wagner, who also reached on a single. Butler scored on a
Bianca Cardenas single and Archer, who reached on another single, scored on a throwing error by the catcher.
Austin Peay got its lone run when Jessica Chernak led off the fifth with a home run, but MSU got the run back and sealed the win in the seventh when Wagner was plunked with bases loaded, pushing home the Eagles’ eighth run.
Wagner led four MSU hitters that tallied double-digit hits with a 3-for-4 performance and Ashbrook had two RBI. Gjevre (12-8) got the win, throwing six innings, allowing just one runs on three hits with four strikeouts.
Morgan (10-9) also took the loss in this game after just one-third of an inning with three hits and two runs allowed. APSU again scattered just three hits among three different players.
MSU will close out the three-game road series Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
