CINCINNATI, Ohio –
Despite an early goal from senior forward Erin Adams, the Morehead State soccer team was defeated by Cincinnati 2-1 Friday night in the season opener for both teams.

Following a long throw in from junior Brittany MacLennan, Adams settled the ball and snuck it past Bearcat goalkeeper Rachel Barnette just five minutes into the match.

“We played well in the first half, I thought the team had a strong showing,” said coach Warren Lipka.

MSU held the lead for most of the first half, until the 35th minute when Emily Hebbeler beat Eagle goalkeeper Lily Meisner for the equalizer.

Meisner made two saves in the first half to keep the score 1-1. The Eagles fired six shots in the stanza, while the Bearcats attempted five.

The match remained square until the 85th minute when Hebbeler found the back of the net for the game winner and her second goal of the game. Hebbeler’s two goals were both unassisted.

“In the second half they turned up the level of emotion and speed.  Not to take anything away from their two goals, but our errors in clearing the ball led to the goals,” said Lipka “If you are going to challenge a team like this from the Big East Conference you have to play flawless, and unfortunately we weren’t able to do that throughout the game.”

Cincinnati outshot MSU 13-2 in the second half and Meisner recorded six additional saves. Meisner totaled eight saves in the match while her counterpart, Cincinnati’s Barnette, stopped three shots.

The loss drops MSU to 0-1-0, while Cincinnati improves to 1-0-0 on the season.

“We will have to raise our level of intensity, but now we know we can play with anyone, and our expectations for the rest of the season will be very high,” Lipka said.

The Eagles will be back in action on Sunday Aug. 22 in West Lafayette, Indiana to face the Purdue Boilermakers. Match time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
