MOREHEAD, Ky. – Erin Adams scored the game winner in the 85th minute and
Giuleana Lopez scored her first goal of the season, while also adding an assist, as the Morehead State soccer team defeated the South Alabama Jaguars 2-1 in comeback fashion in non-conference soccer action Friday night in Jayne Stadium.
Despite only taking one shot in the first half, South Alabama opened the scoring in the 17th minute as Brandi Smith broke past the Eagle defense and beat Eagle goalkeeper
Lily Meisner one-on-one for the goal. It was the only breakdown of the MSU defense in the game.
Morehead State played tough defense the entire game and straightened things out in the second half. Lopez, who joined the Eagle squad just two weeks ago, leveled the score in the 52nd minute when she scored her first goal as an Eagle. South Alabama goalkeeper Melissa Drish was unable to control a
Sam Toepfer cross from the left side of the box. Lopez settled the ball and drilled the shot into the lower right corner of the net.
MSU nearly took the lead in the 67th minute when Adams broke free on the left side past the USA defense and from 15 yards out rifled a shot that was just barely saved by Drish, as it ricocheted off the far post.
Adams exacted her revenge in the 85th minute. Lopez settled a ball on the far left corner of the pitch and crossed it into the box. Adams took care of the rest as she maintained possession in a crowd and blasted home the game winning goal. With the goal Adams now has six goals on the season and has scored in two straight games.
The Eagles outshot South Alabama 13-3 and had a 3-0 advantage in kicks from the corner pocket. The Eagles were whistled for 11 fouls and USA was slapped with 10.
Adams led MSU with six shots and Lopez fired three. Toepfer,
Jillian Birchmeier,
Devan Jordan, and
Brittany MacLennan also took a shot.
Stephanie Gildehaus,
Micaela Hornstein and
Lindsey Oettle played a key part of the victory on the Eagle defense as they cleared and controlled the pitch throughout the game.
Drish stopped five Eagles shots, but surprisingly enough, Mesiner had no saves in the win.
The Eagles will be back at Jayne Stadium on Sunday Sept. 19 as they host Mid-American Conference foe Ohio at 1 pm.
