Volleyball Takes Out Colonels in Three

MOREHEAD, Ky. –
Morehead State volleyball used 12 aces and a strong defensive effort Thursday night to win its third straight match overall and ninth consecutive against Eastern Kentucky. The Eagles swept the Colonels 25-15, 25-21, 25-17 to improve to 5-0 in the Ohio Valley Conference and 11-6 overall.

Redshirt freshman Aryn Bohannon landed a career high five aces, while freshman Lindsey Roth found the gaps three times, a career high as well. Junior libero Liz Schuler nearly averaged seven digs per set as she led all players on the court with 20 digs. Freshman Leslie Schellhaas tallied 10 of MSU’s 46 total digs.

Eastern Kentucky got a nine-kill, 10-dig night from Ashley Edmond. EKU came up with 42 digs, led by libero Abby O’Connor’s 12 ups. The Colonels had difficulty figuring out MSU’s service game and had just one ace themselves. EKU also hit just .120 for the night.

The Eagles hit .296 in the opening set but cooled off to settle for a .229 effort for the match. MSU had 39 kills with 15 errors. The Eagles also notched six team blocks. Sophomore Annie Gruenschlaeger and senior Holly Evans had four rejections apiece. Redshirt junior Emma Keough tallied eight kills, two blocks, and hit a team high .538 with just one error on 13 attempts.

Offensively, though, it was senior Kaitlin Craven’s night. She had 11 kills, made only one error, and hit .357 via 28 swings. Ellie Roberson also landed eight kills.

MSU took the opening set 25-15 as EKU had a slow time getting into its offensive schemes. EKU had eight kills but six errors in the first set. MSU had 11 kills. In the second set, EKU picked up its effort as it improved to a .219 hitting effort. But, MSU served up five of its 12 aces and had 17 kills and 18 digs to win 25-21. The Eagles led 24-17 before the Colonels made it interesting with a 4-0 run.

In the third set, the Eagles trailed early 10-6. But, a 7-1 run – capped by a Craven kill - put MSU on top for good. Leading 13-12, the Eagles went on a 7-3 scoring run to push it to 20-15. EKU closed the gap to 20-17, but Roth jump served three aces in the final five points as MSU went on to claim the set 25-17. She had two consecutive aces to end the set.

MSU returns to the court at Wetherby Gym on Tuesday, Oct. 5 as Tennessee State visits for a 7 p.m. match. It will be “Dig for a Cure” night.
