MOREHEAD, Ky. – The Morehead State soccer team fell to Eastern Illinois 2-0 in Ohio Valley Conference play on Sunday afternoon at Lakeside Field in Charleston, Ill.
Eastern Illinois improves to 5-8-2 overall and 4-2-0 in the OVC, while the Eagles fall to 6-7-3 overall and 2-4-1 in league play.
The teams played to a scoreless opening 45 minutes, with the Panthers leading eight shots to six during the first frame. Eastern Illinois tallied the game-winner eight minutes into the second half as Jessica Blake scored from five yards out in front of the goal. Blake received the ball from a long cross from the right side of the field by Meagan Radloff.
The Panthers added their second goal of the match with only three minutes left in regulation. As the Eagles pushed forward for the equalizer, Eastern Illinois used a quick counter-attack to seal the victory. Kristin Germann dribbled down the left side and notched her fifth goal of the season from eight yards out on the left side.
The Eagles were only outshot by Eastern Illinois 15-13, but the Panthers had 11 shots on goal, while MSU only tallied four shots on frame. Freshman forward
Elizabeth McSparin led Morehead State individually with five shots, including three on goal. Seniors
Brittany Kiracofe and
Stephanie Gildehaus each recorded two shots as well. MSU earned five corners for the match to Eastern Illinois’ four. Both teams had seven fouls.
Senior goalkeeper
Katie Blevins registered nine saves in the match, while EIU’s Jessica Taldone tallied four.
Morehead State returns home for its final non-conference match of the season and lone match of the weekend against Longwood University on Sunday, Oct. 23. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. ET at Jayne Stadium.
