MOREHEAD, Ky. -- The Morehead State baseball team rounded third on the early signing period scoring two more future Eagles. Head coach Jay Sorg announced the addition of pitcher/outfielder Chris Laporte (Bryan Station) and pitcher William Warman (Scott County) to national letters of intent.
Laporte, a right-handed pitcher and outfielder, was named a Perfect Game USA Pre-Season High School Underclassman All-American Honorable Mention as a junior batting .317 with 21 RBI and nine stolen bases. He is a loose-armed pitcher that the Eagles believe has a huge upside.
“Chris is a plus athlete who will get the opportunity to be a dual role player for us,” said Sorg. “He is very young for his class and we believe that he has a huge upside, especially on the mound. His body is really starting to grow and fill out. His velocity has increased from consistent mid 80’s to upper 80’s in a short amount of time.”
Laporte was a teammate of Warman on the Bluegrass Stars this summer. As a member of the Stars, he batted .363 with 49 RBI while striking out 32 in 32 innings pitched.
“He is well-coached by Eddie Brooks who has a reputation of developing players,” said Sorg. “Chris is a high character person. We are excited to have him in our program.”
Laporte believes that he can be a valuable part of an already exceptional recruiting class.
“I am very excited to join the Eagle baseball team,” said Laporte. “The coaches, players and university are all great. I know we have a great recruiting class coming in. I am thrilled for the opportunity to play for this program and help it achieve its goals.”
Warman is a projectable southpaw who can reach into the upper 80’s. As a junior, he was selected as a State East/West All-Star.
“William is everything you look for in a left-handed pitcher,” described Sorg. “He is long and lean with a loose arm. His fastball is already in the upper 80’s. He is extremely projectable and we believe he will pitch consistently in the 90’s as he develops. He competes very well on the mound.”
He compiled a 10-0 record with the Bluegrass Stars with a microscopic 1.12 ERA and 113 strikeouts over 64 innings during the summer season.
“Williams gets better every time we see him and he really outmatched hitters over the summer,” said Sorg. “He has a chance to be a very special player.”
“Morehead State was the right fit for me,” said Warman. “It was exactly what I was looking for on and off the field.”
