PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Host Duquesne opened the first half on a 15-0 run and the second on a 13-2 scoring flurry as the Dukes handed the visiting Morehead State women’s basketball team an 86-53 defeat Sunday at the Palumbo Center.
The Eagles fall to 2-8 while the Dukes move to 7-1. After failing to hit a three-pointer in the opening half, MSU connected on seven triples in the final half to run its consecutive games streak with a trey to 154.
Sophomore guard Tyler Ituen scored a career-high 11 pointS, all in the second half, to lead the visitors. She also grabbed a team-best six rebounds, with five coming after halftime.
Wumi Agunbiade posted team-highs of 19 points and 11 rebounds for Duquesne. Jocelyn Floyd also tallied 19 points, seven assists and six steals. The Dukes out-rebounded the Eagles 60-38. In a physical game on the blocks, both teams recorded nine blocked shots, a season-high for the Eagles.
MSU began the game 1-for-12 from the field, and the Dukes took advantage, scoring 12 of their first 15 points off fast break layups. The Eagles were able to stop the runaway by tying the hosts, 15-15, over the next eight minutes to cut the lead to 30-15. But Duquesne ended the half on a 12-4 run to lead 42-19 heading to the locker room.
The Eagles shot 18 percent (6-of-33) in the opening stanza and were 0-for-12 from three-point range.
The Dukes hit their first six shots in the second half and opened up a 55-21 lead with 17 minutes remaining. DU went on to lead by as much as 37 in the second stanza.
The Eagles finished with a 25 percent shooting efficiency (18-of-71), while the Dukes hit 49 percent (35-of-72) and had 30 fast-break points to go along with a 50-18 lead on points in the paint.
For the Eagles, sophomore Allie Turner and senior Linda Dixon notched seven points each. Freshman forward Mackenzie Arledge had career-highs of five points and four rebounds
Morehead State has the following week off of games for semester final exams. The Eagles host another Pittsburgh-area team, Robert Morris, on Sunday, Dec. 18 at Noon.
