Eagle Soccer Flies South to Face Jaguars, Crimson Tide

MOREHEAD, Ky. –
The Morehead State soccer travels south to battle South Alabama of the Sun Belt Conference in an 8 p.m. ET contest on Friday, Sept. 16 in Mobile, Ala at The Cage, the USA soccer facility. MSU then heads to Tuscaloosa, Ala., to clash with Alabama of the Southeastern Conference on Sunday, Sept. 18 in a 2 p.m. ET match at the Alabama Soccer Stadium.

The Eagles (4-2-1) remained undefeated in their last four games, going 1-0-1 in last weekend’s matches. MSU defeated Ohio University, 2-1, for the first time in program history on Friday night. Seniors Brittany Kiracofe and Jillian Birchmeier scored for the Eagles, with Birchmeier putting in the winning goal in the 87th minute of the match. The excitement would continue into Sunday’s double overtime 2-2 tie against Marshall. After being down 2-0 from the 26th minute senior co-captains Kiracofe and Brittany MacLennan each tallied a goal in the second half to ensure the tie.

This will be the second meeting between the Eagles and South Alabama. The two schools met for the first time last season with MSU coming away with a 2-1 victory in Morehead. For Morehead State and Alabama this will be the first ever meeting between the Eagles and the Crimson Tide.

South Alabama (7-1-0) is riding a seven-game win streak after opening the season with a loss against Louisiana Tech. Most recently, the Jaguars topped Presbyterian (1-0) and Austin Peay (2-1) to win the Port City Classic last weekend in Mobile. South Alabama is led by forward Brandi Smith (six goals, two assists) and goalkeeper Melissa Drish (28 saves, four shutouts).

Alabama (4-2-1) has won its last two games, a pair of 1-0 wins over No. 22 San Diego State (Sept. 4) and UAB (Sept. 9). The Crimson Tide are led by Laura Lee Smith (three goals, 1 assist) and Kendall Khanna (two goals, two assists). Between the posts for Alabama is Justine Bernier, who has tallied three shutouts on the season.

MSU returns to the friendly confines of Jayne Stadium for the start of Ohio Valley Conference league play on Friday, Sept. 23, as the Eagles host Eastern Kentucky for a 7 p.m. match.
