MOREHEAD, Ky. – The Morehead State soccer team is set to defend its back-to-back Ohio Valley Conference championships on Friday, Sept. 23, as the Eagles clash with Eastern Kentucky in a home contest at Jayne Stadium. Match time is slated for a 7 p.m. ET start.
Morehead State (4-3-2) played two hard-fought matches over the weekend, coming out with a 2-2 double overtime tie against South Alabama before dropping a tough 2-1 match versus Southeast Conference foe Alabama. On Friday night, senior midfielder
Brittany Kiracofe scored her third goal of the season in the 44th minute to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead at halftime. In the second half, the Eagle back line gave up back-to-back goals to fall behind 2-1. Freshman forward
Elizabeth McSparin put in the equalizer in the 82nd minute to lift MSU to a 2-2 tie.
On Sunday afternoon, MSU gave up an early goal in the second minute of the match to Alabama but rebounded to give the Crimson Tide a highly competitive match. Senior forward
Devan Jordan scored her 17th career goal and second of the season in the 54th minute to tie the match. The Eagles could not take advantage of their momentum however, and the Tide scored the game-winning goal in the 74th minute of the match.
The Eastern Kentucky Colonels (2-6-1) have lost the last three matches they have played after winning their first two matches of the season on Aug. 28 against Miami of Ohio (2-1 OT) and on Sept. 2 versus UNC Asheville (4-0). Offensively, the Colonels are led by Devon Saini (three goals, one assist) with seven points and Lauren Fant (one goal, one assist) and Sydne Montgomery (one goal, one assist) with three points each. In goal for Eastern Kentucky is Annie Wickett. Wickett has tallied 35 saves on the season, while giving up 13 goals.
This will be the eighth meeting between the Eagles and the Colonels. In the most recent meeting between the two schools, MSU came away with a 2-1 overtime win in Richmond, Ky., last season on two goals by Jordan, including the game-winning header in the 108th minute. After 90 minutes of play, the Eagles and the Colonels were deadlocked at 1-1 before Jordan’s goal sealed the win for the Eagles.
