Volleyball Opens Weekend With 3-1 Win

MOREHEAD, Ky. --
Aryn Bohannon had team highs of 13 kills and 15 digs, and the Morehead State volleyball team opened the Comfort Inn and Suites Invitational with a hard-fought 3-1 (25-20, 23-25, 25-16, 26-24) win over Appalachian State Friday morning.

MSU made 27 attacking errors in the match but compensated with nine aces and eight team blocks to go along with 61 digs in improving to 4-4.

MSU also got a career-high 11-kill effort from freshman Alex Fuelling. Ellie Roberson totaled 10 kills. Redshirt senior Emma Keough had three block assists and became just the second player in school history to compile more than 300 block assists. She has 302 now and needs just 49 more to set the MSU career ecord.

Defensively, sophomore Leslie Schellhaas tied Bohannon for team honors in digs with 15, while senior Liz Schuler picked up 18 back row ups. Caitlin Clark, who ranks second in the OVC in assists, had 42 helpers.

ASU was paced by Maggie Seeds and Anna Wagner with 12 kills each. Seeds also hit a match- high .550. The Mountaineers hit .192 for the match and had seven team blocks.

The Eagles blasted out of the starting gate by hitting .333 and nailing 18 kills in the opening set, winning 25-20. MSU's offensive struggles began in the second set when the Eagles committed 11 attack errors. Despite the stat totals, MSU battled the entire set before falling 25-23.

MSU roared back with 13 kills in the third set and ran away for a 25-16 decision.

In the fourth set, MSU fell behind 21-16 after a serving error, but Bohannon and Fuelling came back with kills and ASU had two attack errors to allow the Eagles to tie it 21-21. MSU had a clinching opportunity at 24-23, but Seeds thwarted that with a kill. Laura McDermott then smashed in a kill and Schuler finished off the win with an ace.
